Location City -  Porto Alegre
State -  RIO GRANDE DO SUL
Country - Brazil   Brazil
About People there were born in Rio Grande do Sul are called gaúcho. The men who work the cattle are called gaúchos, from the Quechua huachu, which means orphan or vagabond. Spanish settlers distinguished the two by calling orphans guachos and vagabonds gauchos, but over time the usage melded into gaucho.

This is a common street scene in Porto Alegre: not paying any attention to what?s going on around, a man holds a cup of the typical beverage from Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and South Brazil, the chimarrão. It?s a hot and bitter infusion popular in these cooler regions of South America. Chimarrão is made from the leaves and shoots of a "Ilex paraguariensis" tree, called "erva-mate", fit into the hard globose fruit of the calabash. Then, it is sipped through a metal straw, which further enhances the heat and flavor of the beverage. Actually, a large quantity of ground leaf is first soaked in cold water, then the hot water is added, over and over again, until all the good stuff has been extracted. In between each addition of hot water the tea is ingested through a special wood or metal straw, called " bomba" , that filters out the leafy material.

This shot was taken at "Redenção? Park, or Farroupilha Park, the most important park in the city of Porto Alegre. It is 370 square km in area, and one of the largest urban parks in Latin America. It was the battle field of the ?Farroupilha? Revolution, when, in the last century, Rio Grande do Sul tried separate from Brazil.

I decided to desatured the background, and add some noise in PS CS.

All comments are wellcome.

Again, too dark to my tastes (maybe your monitor is too bright. Try Adobe Gamma). The chimarrão is obliterated by his hand and the black and white effect doesn't add anything to the image.
I like the second photo you posted from the same guy much much more; it's better visually, has a great composition and put him in the more appealing context of a "chimarrão circle". That photo would be the one I would choose instead of the image you posted first.

Perfeito, Carmem!

Brilliant by all aspects! Mood & Merge between B&W with colors are presenting such a great prospective behind such a shot. Cheers Carmem & BIG 7.

You?re right when you say it looks a photographer.. but he isn?t..neither my friend..
I don?t know him..
He is drinking the "chimarrão".. but the photo is not showing it well.
I used my 28-200 mm lenses.. I was far away from him.
I?m going to upload another similar work today.. hope you like better.
Cheers!
Carmem

Dear Carmem,

the composing is a nice idea with the blurred out background and the colored photographer in the foreground. I like the format and the way you placed your friend.

well done.
cheers,
thilo

Carmem,

Isto dito, gostei do flagra.

Tanto ela e a segunda ficaram 10!

Hi Carmem, although the selective colour separates object form peripheral elements, I don't think it's necessary. The DOF takes care of that. (as you show in the image you posted in the comment section. Left alone, I think it's already a very good shot, and in applying such elaborate PS work, I think you disguise the true nature of this shot a bit too much.

Very interesting narrative, thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Hugo

GREAT SHOT Carmem,

I really like this one, and love the way you have handled this as well.

Awesome image you created. You've added much to the meaning of this scene by mixing the b&w with the color.

Very good work,
Lori :)

I really like this idea Carmem with the background B/W and the foreground focal point in colour. Great shadow on his arm bringing your eye up to his face. The shadow on his face then brings you to his glasses with the sun bouncing off the lens. Wonderful capture and a very informative 'about'.
