I thought they were called "narrow boats". I spent a holiday with parents on one of these, travelling on these old canals, operating the innumerable locks ourselves. It's one of the best holidays i remember.

Hi Gabrielle. I remember these boats in working order. They were called narrow boats. In your pic the 2 windows on the right would have been living accommodation. Forward of that was covered by tarpaulin and the boat would be loaded with grain or coal. Funny you should mention Stoke Bruerne. We were there a week ago. See my partner's (Margaret Sturgess) upload of the scene. Very nice human interest shot BTW. Den

Hello Gabrielle,
This is a delightful photo! I can't imagine too many things more enjoyable than cruising such canals. In the US, we have the Erie Canal in upstate New York, and I intend to travel that one before too long.
Best regards, SteveR

Funny you should say that Rebecca but often they are used as floating restaurants that take you for a trip up the canal whilst wining and dining you. We call them Gin Palaces. Of course the long boat was a working boat originally and whole families lived and worked on them. There is a museum at Stoke Bruerne which tells you all about it - in case you want to visit!

That's a very strange looking boat. It looks like a floating limosine! Very nice shot.
