Hi Richard - he is actually playing, it is just that he is on a downbeat. Even with the fast film the shutter was quite slow so I tried to grab the shot when he wasn't moving his face and body too much, I guess I got his hands in temporary stillness too. As for the grain - personally I like it and I actually don't think that there is any problems with sharpness in this particular image. The grain is just a consequence of using this kind of film and I for one like the association it gives me to the kind of light-situations I use it for.

There is an unanswwered question about this image. One expects the picture of a drummer to show him drumming. This guy is at rest and we don't know why ? Is he tired? Listening to criticism? Taking a cue from the leader? Some pictures raise questions instead of answering them. By the way, if you don't like the grain try experimenting with the various blur options in PS instead of the sharpening ones.

Dear Stefan,
very strong "stage" capture, like the grain and the lighting a lot. I tested myself some changes in grain and sharpness, but you're right: The grain withstands every effort ;-) so probably it's just better to leave the fabulous image as it is. and enjoy the moment. take care, thilo

oh.. i like so much musicians portraits during perfomances... i believe this series of yours is really fantastic... especially the expressions caught... and the overall grainess add a more artistic feel to it.... great work... emy

Thanks Ed - I am afraid that once the 3200 film is in the camera all of it is going to be quite grainy. I did take a look an unsharp mask for this photo but the only thing that really seem to get sharpened is the grain...

Great expression in his face. I think that the soft grainy tone in this picture is fitting but i would have given the drummer some less soft grainy tone. btw thanks for your very helpfull comment on my latest picture i agree with you.
Best Regards
