About
a pond above the tree line in rocky mountain NP, hiked down to shoot this for sunset, sitting waiting and decided, nah, not worth the risk of hikeing back in the dark, so i shot this scene for a while and headed back to the car, good thing to, took me 15 to 20 min to run down, took a hour to get back up to the warm car, my lungs still havent adjusted to the high thin air.... Any suggestions, should i have waited for sunset and walked out in the dark? ill post more from this day in the next couple
I like this one. But sunset would have made it that much better. I always drag my wife with me to entertain me while I shoot the same shot every 15 minutes till I get what I want :) So much for desert solitude.
One thing I would try with this photo is to color burn the mountains in the background. They are a little faded. I did this a lot with my latest round of RMNP shots because I spaced off my ND-Grad filter back in Boston. Really helps make up for that mistake.
LOL it's pretty funny what your mind will do to you when you're out alone. I can relate. I was out taking some night photos one night... in the middle of a field and kept hearing odd noises. It freaked me out. As i was leaving and rounded a very small rise (just enough to block my view) I found out it was a group of cows sleeping and snoring about 30 feet from me.
Jim thanks for your comment, yeah i had a petzel halogin headlamp in my pocket, i was solo on the hike and got a little spooked by a bull elk that was bulgeling in the distance only to walk within 50 yards of me, there scream was a mix of cayote and a baby screaming, i didnt know what it was till i saw the massive animal... i will do the sunset of this lake, i will hopefully have someone to join me on the hike though.
phil, thanks again for your comment, much appriciated
The petzel head lamp is your friend.... or go out on a night that has a lot of moon light. At that altitude the moon will light your way surprisingly well. I once hiked Mt. Whitney under a full moon and I never needed a flashlight.
I think this shot is great as is, but sunset or dusk shot would also be quite dramatic.
