Hi Becky,
this is an outstanding seascape image.
Excellent photographic and PS work. But why the use of TWO filters?

Great job becky, this cedar sets up a great parallel with the horizon, and seems to act as a sieve; sorting calm waters from chaos. You could really dig deep into this one... I mean, if you wanted to.

I am smiling at your description of your setting up this photo - the dedicated photographer at work. It seems that you just about filled the frame with the log (can I see the end of it on both sides?) - and I can see the logic of that. The resulting composition becomes very horizontally oriented however, and I find myself losing interest fairly soon. Technically I think it is good and while it is gray day, there is some interesting light going on. This is more of a piece with a purpose of clean lines and almost a zen feel to it.

John: Thanks for your comments. :) I think I thought the ND filter would give me more detail in both the water and sky. I think I wasn't thinking rightly at the time. Sometimes I follow a strange path of logic. At any rate, I don't have a graduated ND filter in my possession, though I'd like to. Maybe I should ask Santa. ;)
Kim: I'm glad you pointed out those two spots on the horizon because I hadn't noticed them at all! I will try to clone them out, as per your suggestion.
Hmmm . . . I should really tweak photographs at night when my apartment isn't flooded with bright sunlight. Methinks this photo could use a speck more contrast.

That one piece of driftwood is so simple in its presentation, but it is the image. The colour breaks the monotones in sea & sky, the placement adds impact and draws your eye into the crashing waves... awesome job!
I like the fact that a wave near the shore is just about to break as well... some tension in the water!
What are the two little black spots on the horizon? Since this image is all about lines and cleanliness I wonder if cloning them out would make for a more simple shot. I only noticed them because my eyes were following all the lines in this image and I happened on them.

You are right Becky, those sorts of days try one's patience. I think you did pretty good. I'm not certain what you wanted the ND4X for. You might have been better sreved using a neutral gradient to add emphasis to the clouds. Ceder drift wood? Here in L.A. our beach debris is far more disgusting. Good for you. John B
