About This is an image of the outer wall of the iron age hill fort at Ladle Hill in Hampshire. The hill in the middle distance is Beacon Hill which also has a clearly defined hill fort atop it. The modern A34 dual carriageway now arrows north between the two and one must assume that these would have been strong defensive positions overlooking one of the few passages beneath the north hampshire downs. The sense of age is palpable here. I used a 2 stop hard ND grad, 3 stop soft ND grad and 81B warm-up to create this image just before sunset.

Excellent work, I especially appreciate the info about your filters. I'm experimenting with these now, I just bought a set of coloured grads which provide some wierd effects.

I do think this needs something extra in the foreground, but as you say there's not always too much around. You have made a very good job of what was available.

Howie, yes I agree that a bit more foreground would have been nice but I wanted to capture the ancient hill fort and this was the only view I could find. The light on the ridge of the fort wall provides some foreground but it's not perfect. There's a small group of trees nearby but they need early morning light to give them strength as a foreground so I may return for a dawn shot! Consider it a work in progress.

Lovely colours, great sky. I always find the Downs around Wiltshire and Berkshire a bit primeval - a 'thin' place where the past and present, physical and spiritual, aren't as far apart as we think.

I like this picture, it evokes very special memories of my RAF days, driving down from Yorkshire to see my parents in the New Forest. I'd set off mid-morning, and be hitting the new Chievely section of the A34 about this time of day. I used to have a little bet with myself as to whether or not I'd make it home before it was fully dark - the traffic on the M3 from the Downs near Winchester all the way to Ringwood always thwarted me. Happy days, though.

Thanks for sharing this picture.

I really like the light in this capture. Just wish there was something in the foreground
