Fabulous shot, expressing the essence !
I would have cropped it more from the top, until where the umbrella crosses the right side of the picture, thus adding more importance on the kids face .. nevertheless a very strong shot !

Love how you didn't follow the typical route of focusing on the face, but rather instead focusing on the raindrops. Adds power and emotion to the picture. I really like the diagonal line...

Kasia

ps. thx for commenting on my shot.

John both of these portraits are just wonderful, wouldn't know which to choose to say is better. They are both so good in different ways, the other one as a more straighforward portrait - perfect, this one is different and clever, I love the way you have focussed on the raindrops, and the shapes of the composition - Both are 7+++++ for me, - but then you did have a handsome subject

Hi John, Weird, isn't it? That happened to me a few times as well....With some I even seem to notice that my average rating drops with every positive comment I receive:)

Cheers,

Hi Hugo, First I want to say thanks for Your Great comments, Second I agree totally with You that the first photo is better than this one,but just wanted to mention that this photo got so much more responce and positive comments then the first photo!Go figure. Just goes to prove that ,Yes it is very subjective! Thanks so Much My friend!

Hi John, As a continuing / second shot in a series, I think it fits perfectly with the first. But as a stand alone, I think the first one is stronger. That's mainly because of the interaction between the camera and your son. On the other hand, I do believe the composition in this one is more powerful and artistic. I also like the focus on the drops instead of on the face, but that in conjunction with the first one too. Obviously, that doesn't mean this isn't a good one; on the contrary! It's just not as good as the first, and that's very subjective...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Excellent capture from an unusual angle, John. The drops on the umbrellaseem to dominate the photo, but it is the unhappy child's face that takes first place.
Thank you for your very comprehensive comment on my "J. in profile".
Best regards,
Rafi

15 second shutter speed? That is just incredible John. Did you use a tripod, and support the umbrella somehow, or is the technical data incorrect? This is a fabulous shot, by the way, with excellent composure. The sharpness on the umbrella, and out of focus on the boy, really sets the mood for this awesome photo. Regards, Darren

Wnderful composition and mood. I like the expression on your son's face and I particularly like the soft focus in contrast to the sharpness of the ombrella and the drops. Excellent choice of the square format. The toning is superb
Outstanding capture, John.
Well done

This is really a great photo John.. I love that your son is out of focus, it adds to the mood and gloomy feeling of the day. This should be an award winner in my opinion.. very strong image with good lighting and great composition.. great work.

The composition and lighting are excellent. I like the way you focused on the rain drops on the umbrella and making John's face in the background.
Great great shot, regards my friend,

Excellent shot John, Osft focus from focusing on the umbrella gives it a real far off dreamy look which is where the child seems to be.

This a great picture John, very sensitive. I think cropping some of the umbrella would put more emphasis on the great face which is the focal point of this picture. Don. Here is my version.

Christian Barrette   {K:21125} 11/14/2004
This is a precious one. The angle of view is of a parent to a child - very good for the theme. Also, the fact that the point of focus is on the raindrops, leaving the face out of focus, leads us to a sort of nostalgic feeling. As the boy seems to be daydreaming too, I thnk all is in harmony here around the theme and the emotion.
