About Bristle Cone Pines are known to be one of the longest living species of plants in the world. These were located in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah at 9,000+ft. Just beyond these trees was 750 foot drop. Thriving in incredibly harsh conditions these trees live longer the harsher the conditions. I can only guess how old these trees were before natures wrath took it's toll. 1000 years old? 1500 years old? 2000 years old? In either case their unique form backlit by the afternoon sun caugh my eye. Later in my trip I ventured to the Eastern Sierras in California to photograph their long seperated brothers.

You have an unbelievably good eye for these shots Jim! Excellent composure of the trees, and also the placement of the sun, as it peeks through the branches. Just Fabulous.

jim, amazing how they survive, isn't it? the ones in the back appear to be partially uprooted. as if the soil beneath has been blown away over time. great composition, esp. with the sun peeking out from behind the branches. good job holding the sky, btw. polarizer?

take care,
tom

Interesting subjects....landscape appears almost alien.

I think it's great, though I do like the lone tree idea. I'll be keeping an eye out for that one.

I like the image and the scene.. think that the composition may be just a little busy.. it would have been cool if you could have isolated one of the trees and made it the main focus...the sky is incredible, not a cloud to be seen.. nice work
