About Yesterday I saw this lady who was very well dressed and very particular about her poise and appearance. She was sorting out gemstones for a customer and was surrounded by many small mirrors and lights. I couldn't resist trying for her photo even though she was unaware I was there. I apologise for the slight bluriness, but under the conditions I didn't have a lot of choice. I was quite drawn in by all her character lines.

Tones and texture added later.

The blur and the grain just add to the antique-ness of this shot... it feels like it should be in a museum, depicting life long ago.
Love the slight shadows in the lines of her face.

Thankyou Khaled. I would suspect she has spent the majority of her life out in the sun which has detrimental effects on the skin.

Great portrait Judi.
I like the shadows and lighting, makes the lines on her face pop out.
I think the grainy effect added to her age.
Great work,
Khaled.

Judi, it is just amazing, i love it, wonderful capture, i am not sure how come the hair in focus and the face is not, but guess what, this blurriness is adding a beauty to the picture, very well done, Regards,

Makiton is wonderful. It is a form of sign language used as a bridging tool until they start to pick up in their speech. We used it on our youngest from before he could walk and he was able to sign about 15 words, which made things so much easier. Most people use a few of the signs in their every day lives without realising it. It is worth asking his special teachers or the speech pathologist about it. My youngest is working very hard to be able to go to preschool in a couple of years as they don't think he will be ready and yet the school that we are planning to send him to have already approached us as to whether he will be using Makiton when he gets to them. They want to send their teachers away to be trained in Makiton ready for his arrival.

PECS. Both his school now and his two other previous schools used PECS. I have never heard of Makiton. What is it consist of?

Judi Liosatos Judi Liosatos   {K:34047} 1/2/2005
Thanks Laura. Mine are doing okay. A very long way to go. My daughter is a handful at the moment whilst my oldest son has gone backwards with his hearing again. My youngest son has slipped backwards in his speech again and so we have to start doing Makiton again. It is very frustrating for him as his speech was very poor before this. Do you use Makiton or PECS with your son?

Laura Gariano Laura Gariano   {K:3309} 1/2/2005
He's doing pretty well. He and my daughter have been really close lately. Though as a mother you know with closeness, comes fighting! Bickering and getting on each other's nerves. Anthony's favorite movie right now is Finding Nemo, and has been memorizing the lines. He doesn't talk much and often his speach isn't very clear, but there is a lot of proclaiming, "Fish are friends, NOT food!" I'd have to say that's his favorite line. He's such a joy. It saddens me sometimes his frustration with his limited ability to communicate. Its hard on him. I adore both of them though and though Rachel has her moments taking advantage of her brothers lack of verbal skills (i.e. he can't tell on me) she is a good big sister who more often than not takes him under her wing and tries to teach him and take care of him. I love being a mother! How are yours?

Judi Liosatos Judi Liosatos   {K:34047} 1/2/2005
Yes definitely. I think that is why I take so many sneaky shots...they come out far better than posed images. How is your son doing now Laura?

Wow, great shot. The graininess really emphasizes her aged face. Such a wonderful natural expression. I agree with you about posed people. My boyfriend looks absolutely terrible when posing for a picture. Stiff, with a terrible "pose smile" that borders on looking evil. It is one of the reasons I love taking pictures of my son. As you are well aware, autistic children don't pose, they don't fake smile. His expressions are always genuine. I love that. Wonderful capture!

Judi, this is a masterpiece. The B/W rendering has added to the sad look on her face. It could almost be a close up of a stone statue. To my favs this one.

Thankyou so much Bryan. I was lucky enough to come across many wonderful faces yesterday. I can relate to what you are saying..it is like the age old theory...when you have no money the shops are full of wonderful things that you want, but when you have lots of money to spend...there is nothing you see that you want...lol!!

i love this one Judi, great job... whenever i see someone with such character i either dont have a camera (cardinal sin) or i am reluctant to ask them in the fear that they will think i only want them for the drama on their face. this, this telss a great deal...wonderfully done.. bryan

Judy, my friend, then you do say that I exaggerate, but, I only say the truth, how I not saying that this portrait is a true work of art?? you have captured an expression without price of a lady that should be very wise for the age and the tranquility that she emanates.
Congrats and God bless you
