I don't know why it's been so long since I commented on your pics. Stuff like that shouldn't happen :)
For me this is the best out of the three. I think the pose by the silhouette is the most striking, and really eye-catching. It also seems to be re-inforced by the angle of the branches being parallel to the torso of the man.

Hi Emgy, Always a pleasure to hear from you and read your indepth analysis. I agree there's an obscure part here. But as I'm more interested in the photographic / postprocessing part of it, I think I made a good choice to stay away from that. Thanks for the analysis, and I share your choice of the favourite in this series.
You haven't missed that much, I've been away from Usefilm for quite a while too, haven't uploaded much since February....

I never mind heay manipulation when it's well done and to the point.If your intention was to enphasize the mood in this series, well you succeeded perfectly well.Although I can imagine that some of us will see an "obscure" part in these pictures, I also like the mood most of all. In each of the three pictures, the darkness and the tumultuous sky remind me of an impending storm on a cold night. I chose to comment on this one not cause it it my favorite of the three - I like them all and couldn't pick up one - but because it's just the last in the series. I've missed too much of your work to go back and comment on everything.
I'd also like to remark that the broad black frames add a special touch to the images.
Simply beautiful work!

hugo, sorry for the minimalist commentary :^) i couldn't help it. but seriously, this series is very strong. each frame while very strong on it's own evokes a rising sense of tension. maybe even a bit of fear. a story that is apparently obvious but we, the viwers, are not entirely sure. what truth lies hidden in the frames?
a truly outstanding set. one of my favorites. i'd love to see it on my wall. maybe in a single long frame.

What's so interesting about work like this, for me, is that even if it wasn't your intention to make a statement, & actually i don't feel like you are one way or the other, they do evoke feelings & discussion for those of us who view them. Which is the glory & wonder of art. You have simply presented us with a view of the world, unattached to any personal or political message, & we get to discover for ourselve how & why they move us in the way they do - without the artist or photographer trying to dictate how we 'should' feel about it. This whole series is full of that kind of respect & wisdom & you have done an amazing job at that end. Plus, they're just esthetically very dynamic pieces. Really well done, Hugo - congratulations.

Your end result is excellent.
I would like the availability of more dof also but I know very little of PS, I shoot only RAW and use Nikon capture to set my white balance, play the contrast and add some sharpening, after that I edit very little. I size to 1024x768 and set the image to my desktop wallpaper for a while to see if I like the picture, then it gets sized and framed for UF.
I am just at the point of really understanding and seeing the difference in dof, I shot some deer shots Tuesday and I had some low lighting situations that forced me to shoot 2.8, even though it increased my shutter speed the results of the deer was very shallow, I then lowered my shutter speed and increased my f stop and had to wait for the moment of stillness to take the shot, the end result was much better although I had more wasted shots due to animal movement.
I force myself to carry my tripod as much as possible.
Again thank you for the explanation it is all coming together slowly but surely.

Hi Lee, Thanks for your comment. The reason I use a fairly sensitive ISO setting is partially based on my approach when "out in the field", and partially on the conditions that day.
When shooting outdoors, I like to use a as wide as possible range of appertures without the need for a tripod. (gives me the freedom / window to choose) Most shots I took with shutterspeed upto a maximum of 1/15'(depending on the focal lenght) are shot hand held. I even have images upto 1 second taken "hand held", wedgin the camera between objects) Anyway, I don't want to be forced to reduce the DOF because of weak lighting and slow shutterpeeds, so I compensate with the ISO sensitivity. Although I use a custom curve in my D100, I'm not entirely satisfied with the outcome, yet (tonal range, colour depth and such), so I still rely on PS to do the final post processing. And having to rely on PS, I can also easily reduce the noise, which is inherent to the higher ISO sensitivity.
There were gale force winds that day, and I even had to adjust the physical size of my lens (hence the 50mm with 2x tc; I started out with a 135-400, but that was way too bulky) to prevent the camera from being blown out of my hands (very difficult to keep steady), and a very fast shutterspeed was the only option to get more or less acceptable photos.

This prompted me to go look at previous comments on your others in this series to see what had prompted you to make the remark in your "about" re "distancing yourself..."). My statement was in support of your position. When you wrote "I find it strange that we need to mention this amoungst other photographers," do you mean in general? Or are you wondering why I said what I did? Just want to clarify before I launch into those thoughts that are rattling.

I don't know Hugo...people's personal preferences I suppose. But surely the first two also told the story, perhaps in fewer words...
But I'm kind of surprised that more people didn't see this one as having 'more impact' (no pun intended either!! LOL) IT's way stronger, for me anyway...
And compositionally, I thought this was the best all the way around. Oh well...we all see photos in different ways, which is one of the things that makes this site so interesting!

Maybe it's because it tells too much, might be perceived too confronting, or leaves less to the viewers imagination as the previous ones...

When I first saw this photo, Hugo, it almost looked as though he was shooting at the dust spots from your sensor in the digicam.(kill those blasted spots!) I don't mean to detract from the feel of this magnificent photo, but this was just an attempt at some humor that I found in the picture.

Hugo. I like the series very much. The scale in this one is very eye catching. This one is my favorite by way of composition but I do see two things that distract a little. The top half of your subject is a little above black as compared to his bottom half. It breaks the continuity. The second is the noise/grain most noticeable top right. I know noise reduction is tough when there is fine detail present like the tips of those branches.
All in all it is a great series...

This is full of drama, and it's tough to get away from the emotional impact it has. You are right to avoid the political discussion. It is life that you have captured, and not a position on it. In fact, it is for the viewer to decide for himself, as is every aspect of the image. You cannot control what we feel, can you. This is an amazing silhohuette, and it is shouting loud and clear for me to take it in, through both its stark contrast and imagery. Very powerful composition and .... T.

My only slight niggle with this one is that the top half of the silhouetted figure looks a little less jet black than the bottom half. I think I'd have preferred to see a full silhouette.
But that's a minor quibble!!

This is a great finale. I like it because it retains the ambiguity right to the end! Is he shooting, or has he just been shot?! Either or both are possible (of course I'm sure you were practicing 'safe photography' and nobody was really shooting anybody else ;-)
Powerful and dramatic lighting and also the movement in the grass.
I have greatly enjoyed this series. If I had to pick a favourite I would take #2, but they are all very good.

OK, this one is the winner. I love it...any publisher would love this picture for the cover of a novel...remains to be seen who is hunting who...the trees one this last instalment...anyway "in the end only the tress remains" . GREAT...what can i say.
( one last details..maybe is the conversion of teh jpg the shy is a bit with noise...IMO)
