About (Thanks to those who commented previously, I had to reload)

Explanation of Title: A little humerous story to share: This is both our girls' first music recital. Sarah is here playing the flute (Rachel plays violen). After it was over, Sarah informed me that the 3 new flutists had only been taught 2 of the songs the orchestra played (they missed rehearsals on the rest due to field trips). They were caught off guard, but on their own decided to improvise and just pretend to blow into the flute and move their fingers through those numbers -- their DECISIVE MOMENT (no one was the wiser!)

"Technical": The past week has been spent at school functions and so all I've got to show are pics of the kids. Below is the original pic before my diddling in PS. It was taken from a seat in the audience using flash -- something I'm not fond of, but no choice-- thus the little pins of light in the eyes). Be my guest if you'd like a go at it. I didn't have any luck trying to create a high key out of it, though I thought that might be nice to do. Instead I yanked the tones around in curves (no clue...just pulled this way and that until arriving at this), then I sepia-toned it, selected around her and yanked the dark tones all the way over to blacken the background. What was left I cloned out. And of course it was cropped.

thank you for your congratulations RE several of my recent images.

i really like this image, particularly the very clever crop and aspect ration! however, seeing the "before" and "after" blows me away...i am very new to "post-processing" or whatever its really called and this is a good illustration of how much "good post-processing" can enhance an image. thanks!

Exellent work Antonia, Love the composition of this piece with your daughter on the right, very original, i suppose it makes sense to shoot it like this but it just looks wicked! Great work, well done!

Wow! that's quite an accomplishment based on what you had to work with. You must be a master of the digital darkroom.

I like the story that goes with this picture too. It made me smile.

I also want to thank you for the congratulations on my shot taking Best Color Photograph. The image itself is in my portfolio if you care to see the shot in detail.

Toni,

Excellend PS work to create a very striking and beautiful portrait. The presentation is also spot-on!

The crop really helps to concentrate on the one aspect of her personality.

Oh how I wish I'd learned to play a musical instrument. And flute was one that I might have taken up (or violen...or piano...lol). I diddled with the guitar and piano for fun, but never learned to play from sheet music. Music is a wonderful outlet, as is art (and I include photography as an art). Hopefully you still play regularly, if not professionally, as my husband played classical for 13 years growing up and now won't play because he's so rusty. Once again...nice to meet you Trish. :) Antonia

Oh wow I love this. love your rich tones. here. gorgeous. I love any style musical shots. there is never a wrong way to shoot musicians. I too am a flute player. :) have played now for 25 years. I know longer play professional. but I still love to play when I can. It's my other love besides Photography.

Lily, yours is a very clever and engaging rendition. This is the first time I've seen that done, and is most appealing. The second post's crop appeals more I think. Also, the lettering and framing goes perfectly! She is going to love it too (will show her when she gets home). Thank you for taking the time to do this, as it has inspired me. Antonia

Hi Tony, your version looks deceptively simple which I discovered after I started fiddling with the original picture. I agree with the last poster that you have created art out of the original picture. The way she blends into the black background, the way you framed it avoiding the sitting problem. Anyway, here are my amateur attempts at this.

Thanks CB, thanks, and not an insult. The original was soooo average and that's why I thought to show it.

What you did with that "average" (I hope I didn't insult you with that) Flash image is impressive.
The toning, crop, presentation and expression is great.
Good work!

I was meaning to comment on this one earlier Toni.
I think it's great how you have taken a somewhat average snapshot and turned it into a real character study type portrait. You do a lot of nice work.

I think you managed to get the best out of the original photo. Excelent job. The black background is great agains the flashlight.

Thanks Margaret. I have different ways of selecting. In this case I used lasso (I have a Wacom tablet with pen), feather setting 10. I selected around her as closely as I could, but didn't need to be exact because of the way in which I was planning to darken the background. I used levels and slid the dark knob over to the right. There were some highlights left and so I cloned those out (such as the music stands). Often I select quickly (I hate to fuss with selections), just getting as close as I can, and then I go back with the eraser and a soft brush to get the details. Then I use the blur tool to soften hard edges that don't look natural. If you want the color version, you need to bring it in as a separate layer over BW image and then merge or flatten. I simply select and drag from one image to the other.

Thanks Carsten...not a server problem. Some other issue not worth going into. I'm sorry I had to do that because I didn't want to lose the comments. I appreciate you coming in again and leaving yours.

Oh, and Mike... also thanks for the info re the catchlights...that I am very familiar with and what I strive for with natural light..my preference. "Pin Lights" is the phrase I use to describe what is in her eyes in this one...just my humor.

Toni,

You have another great bit of art work here. This pictures is much better than the original.

The sepia tones on the black background works very well. The "little pins lights" you mention are called "catch lights". Portrait and fashion photographers work hard at getting those. It brings life to the eyes.

Mike

I like the result very much (ok, the frame could be a tad narrower, a matter of taste of course). Good idea to show the original - a highkey is quite impossible with the background IMO. (Strange, but I posted this comment yesterday, and it disappeared... Server problems on UF?)

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 1/23/2005
Toni I love both images, but I agree that the background is a bit busy the original does not do Sarah justice. I was going to play around and cut out Sarah [ how do you ahieve your separation - it is excellent, I don't always get as good as a result as I would like. This one I went round with the magnetic tool, but it leaves it jagged in places] and put on another background, however I have to work on Den's machine and none of my work is on there. So I borrowed another of your shots and put the two together, not very good, and a very hasty job, but maybe an idea for you. I was going to keep her in colour, lighten a bit etc, but it goes to BW when put on your background.

Toni i love this and i loved it yesterday as well, the photo is gorgeous, but the story is just superb.... i'm so intrigued that little minds of that age could think of something so quickly and pull it off so well, my hat is off to them, they are going to be great little people for our future..... tell them i said 'Great Job'.....

Hi Toni, I loved the end result of your work. The cropping is excellent so that composition. Flute passes the photo in lover 1/3; The girl stands near right 1/3, the eyes catch the viewers eye and then the flute leads the eye into the rest of photography. The skin of the girl's face and left hand seems lost some details that seem to be present in the original shot. But the result seems amazing considering the original composition. Regards, Alper
