About shot in low contrast jpeg.
further reduced contrast.
(rudimentary software.
good for learning basics I guess.
and directing attention back to taking a decent photo in the first place)
is this basically the parameters for older phots effect low contrast?

softened to fight grain distraction.

My conclusion form low-light stage photography is that low light is often also bad light. I read Taran's commentary with interest and I can sort of agree with the composition ideas although this is hardly a fashing shot. My idea was to go more for exaggerating the side-light on the sax and even further sacrifice the detail in her face.

Wo Taran it's technique I need!
Ta!
should have spot exposed the face?
I think slarty the *istds can.
Moving target though.
Maybe addding a black space for the legs was where I was heading by darkening it. subconsciously.
Thanks.

I usually don't critique technique, but for portraits of women I stick to 3 types of shots, head shots, 3/4 shots (waist up), and full length. This shot is somewhere between the 3/4 and full length, meaning the legs are cutoff, a bit of a distraction (for me anyway/my pet peeve). I realize the lighting was tough, and you are trying to capture the sax, but, in this case, there is more going on beneath this subjects knees than above her head, i.e. more interesting lighting and shadows. Full length portraits in the field are tough for anyone who doesn't do them for a living because most photographers focus on the face/chest of the subject and shoot, leaving too much space above the subjects head (your picture is an example). My advice to you is to focus on the face and then recompose the shot, maximizing the amount of your subject in the frame, and capturing her full body. I do a lot of those blasé full length portraits you see in People or Us weekly, my full length female photos won't sell unless they include the shoes of the female principal, which is important for fashion editors and people who critique how celebrities look, and what label they are wearing. The spirit of the shot is excellent, you did a good job given the lighting, just thought you might want to know how this shot could have been perfect. A crop above the head would also be nice, it has no useful information. You will notice that if you had just moved the camera down a notch, you would have got it all... in other words, the useless black at the top of the frame could have highlighted the interesting lighting around the amp. Thanks for sharing.
