Richard,
Thank you for critiquing this photo! I just got a taller tripod so I plan to get out there again and try to get some more night shots. :)
Thanks again,
Cheri

I love playing around with night photography. I did find out the hard way that a tripod is a must. I don't how many potentially great photos got ruined because I was either too lazy to use a tripod or It was left at home. This is a great picture. Its pretty hard to get good color at night.

Cheri, I did some quick work on it in two segments. I selected the building structures at the bottom (using PS, magnetic lasso) and lowered the brightness levels a tad. I then selected the other part of the photo (inverse in PS) and added contrast and lowered brightness. I then ran the whole thing through 'Neat Image'.

Ferdinand,
That is great! Good job with the black sky and not losing the colors. What program do you have and what are the steps to change the photo like that?

Cheri, first of all thanks for your comment on my fireworks shot. For this shot I totally agree with what everyone else has said. A tripod is a must have for night shots. The version which Saeed cleaned up looks very nice.

Keep experimenting and having fun. Night shots are not generally good subjects to use your camera's automatic setting on. Without spending money on a book, I am sure there are many tutorials on the web for free which can help out. It is very important you learn the relationship between shutter speed, aperture, and film speed. This will enable you to adjust the 3 of them to get the effects you want with your night photos. you can start here with my little tutorial from my site: http://www.bassdesigns.net/photographytipspp.pdf
After you read that, if you have any questions feel free to email me direct at ernie@bassdesigns.net

Keep shooting!

Better Yet try two things. try the Kodak Ultra color 100 speed instead and also read books. Go to Amazon.com and try looking at books from Lee Frost and Bryan Peterson. They put out some awsome tips with out making it boring. If you want check my portfolio. I have a good collection of long exposure shots. Cheers...

Nice colurs and composition, but for all kinds of night shots you should use a tripod.

LaMaro,
Thank you for your critique!! And for your good suggestions. I will certainly try using a tripod next time I go out. Also I think I used too high ISO # of film. Next time I think I will go with 200ISO.
Thanks again,
Cheri

Saeed Al Shamsi,
Thank you for the comment and the adjustment to this photo. I was taking this photo without a tripod, which I now regret..but plan to try with one again soon. Also I am not sure of the shutter speed or aperture I used ( I am still learning). Thank you for the adjustment but I felt it somewhat degraded the vibrant colors I was trying to display on the actual ferris wheel. However the black sky looks much better.

Thank you again,
Cheri

Cheri,

I like the setting but you really missed out on a great opportunity for this shot. Next time bring a tripod along with you and set your shutter speed for long exposure. Like 30secs to a min by using your bulb setting. This would make the lights on on ferris wheel create a spriral circle of colors. Since it looks like a clear night with stars and the stars are always in motion you could have create the stars streaking as well. Don't worry too much about this there are plenty of opportunities to go around.

I think this image has no major problem may be just a clean of noise and adjust the degraded sky, I can not say much `cos no such information regarding: shutter speed, aperture, hand held or tripod used, though beautiful composition. I did some cleaning work and adjustment to give it more sharp and clear dark sky.Saeed
