About on possibly a sacred pathway up the waitaki valley to the mountain omarama to read the years weather forcast. That was generally a job for a lone tohunga I understand and possibly this was part of some fairly specialized knowledge. Today I am not aware of anyone firmly saying they know what the collection of painting were about. A very rare thing in New Zealand for a maori to draw on a wall.
waitaki
the maori did not write letters as such
it is whatever it is and was
most of it has been dug away for museum preservation hence the two scoops in this limestone
Greg Collins turf sorry Greg.

Strange how things happen. You posted this while I was away on holiday to Death Valley, California. While there I shared some stories with a ranger and he sent me off to a site with native american rock writings. I should be posting them in the next week or so. The writings I found were of water symbology and game animals.
Cheers - JB
