I was not aware that the Pheasant was the State Bird of South Dakota, we have been taking quite a lot of pheasant shots lately. When we had a UK UF Meet here recently, we took them to our 'favourite' bird watching place and the pheasants came and greeted us - as soon as we got there LOL It was great, we were wondered after telling them they might see a couple of pheasants, hence the silly composition I did of us all with pheasant put in everywhere. Anyway sorry I am rambling on - nice composition - I do appreciate when people put a bit of info in the about. Margaret

Very nice presentation Pat. The colors of the composition are well match, great flight shot of the pheasant and I like the soft blur of the background.... I like :) Lee

how strange... i wrote my comment before reading the others and i was shocked to find that you aren't happy with it. i see what you mean about it being a DOF issue. the grass is not quite as defined as the bird making the bird appear as if it where on another plane and closer to the viewer.
btw, i think this what makes it. it's like something out of the matrix. surreal and somehow out of place but you just can't put your finger on it. i still think it rocks.

pat, i appologize in advance for the coming cliche, but... wow! the panomaric format very effectively conveys not only the direction but the speed of the bird. the blur also helps this. btw, is it gaussian? motion? both? beautiful bird too. this photo really makes me want to be there. the only choice then would be: nikon? benelli? nikon? benelli? ;^) a truly great photograph. excellent job!
take care, tom

I think a bird that was standing on the path leading to the house would work great. That was one of my first thoughts when I saw the photo. It would be nice if someone or something was standing in the left part of the photo looking at it, but with a little scepticism. Maybe you have a bird looks sceptical in your archive :-) just kidding. But seriously I think your thought was right, adding something to this photo is defintely a good idea in general.

I can't disagree. I wresteled with this one for quite some time. I wasen't even going to post this shot. It was shot with two different cameras and two differnt films. One at 300mm and the other at 28mm. I think its a DOF issue. The pheasant just is not at the right depth, perhaps. No matter where I put him he just didn't feel right. here's the originals

I like the look very much. Great mood/atmosphere. Very nice framing using a wide, almost panoram like crop. For some reason the bird doesn't do anything for me. It doesn't look unreal or pasted in, it is more that it doesn't fit the oberall mood of the photo.
