About In February, I was fortunate enough to observe a Sun Pillar. One can occur at sunrise or sunset. A Pillar is caused by reflection off horizontally aligned ice crystals in our atmosphere. Usually, a pillar rises only a few degrees. More rarely, one reaches further and produces a 'spotlight' effect as this one did. It is quite lovely to see. My first observed Sun Pillar and my new digital camera--a great combination!
(I don't quite have the resizing, compression thing figured out well enough yet to get better quality when posting. However, after a few attempts, I'm leaving this one here.)

Carsten, thank you for commenting on my picture. Yes, I did know of this phenomenon but was never fortunate enough to see one. I am so glad I had my new camera when I did see one for the first time. I do hope it is not the last.
Thanks so much for taking the time to retouch my picture. It certainly does add a more dramatic touch. I like to see different ways my pictures can be presented. It's the way to learn.
Take care, Mary

Mary,

Never seen such a nature phenomena!
I probably have to travel to the Nordic area or Canada again to have a chance (we went to the Canadian rocky?s for Honeymoon).

Anyway, Beautiful colors.
The exposure is superb.

Wow, that's the first time i've seen a photo of a sun pillar, and lovely colours too. My camera wasn't working properly when I saw one so i missed the chance. (I had a massive mound to use as a silhouette to make it look like a volcano too, dammit) Thanks for your comment and also the explaination of the pillar, I had been wondering how they worked.

What a great natural drama, thank you for posting. Did not know this phenomenon until now. As you know, I like to play around with PS, so I tried to enhance a bit the spotlight

This what I like about your photos, not only are they beautifull they are also informative. I have never heard of this occurance before. You will get the hang of "fixing" digital photos to fit USEFILM's limitations soon enough. The hard part is to restrain yourself from doing too much fixing.

Hi Shane. Thank you for the comliment on my picture. (I find it hard to believe you went somewhere without your camera.) No, I didn't see it when it first dipped. It would have been neat to get a picture of both pillars. I was looking out the kitchen window and saw that the sunset looked interesting so ran out with my camera. When I got to where I had a good view, I was delighted to see the pillar.

Hi Mary!

Yes I remember this one and it was stunning! Can you believe I didn't have my camera with me!!!! Well at least the kids were in the car with me so I made sure they saw it. It was an amazing site becasue of its size. It reached quite high in the sky, but i don't know if you noticed when it first dipped below the clouds. It was a reverse pillar stretching from the clouds down to the ground. I'm so glad you've captured it as it reminded me of that amazing evening. Thanks!
You've captured it with great detail and colour too! Excellent excellent job.
