About Eye of a racing pigeon. Racing pigeons are known for their keen eyesight - according to tests done a pigeon can easily see over a distance of 250km from a height of 50 meters on a clear day. Among the racing pigeon fanciers, several eyetheories evolved. As a pigeon fancier and photographer I was naurally drawn to the subject and photographed hundreds of pigeon eyes as part of my own study. What really got me hooked is the amazing variance in colour and texture to be found within racing pigeons. To photgraph them succesfully is also extremely difficult. This photo was taken with a 10XMicroscope occular mounted on a PVC pipe that can be "zoomed". Depth of field is extremely shallow and the pigeon is extremely sensitive to any movement, often blinking due to the change shutter opening. It's like what Gary Player (SA golfer) said: The more I practice the luckier I get - I was lucky to get almost the whole eye in focus on this one

I wish usefilm guys had a rating option above excellent ..

upon smelling danger, the first reaction of a bird would be to 'wink'. the process of winking includes squeezing pupil, tightening of the eyelid, sliding it down like a shutter and folding it back. all this happens in a microsecond.

your camera captured the first part of that microsecond when the bird has just started to squeeze its pupil. nothing less than a miracle. simply incredible !!

Hi Richard - It actually started way back in 1980 while I was a student and got hold of a discarded microscpoe occular. I mounted it centred on a piece of wood thatI fixed one end of the PVC pipe. I used a cut-off piece of an elbow joint which slides snugly over the PVC pipe and glued a Pentax adaptor ring onto the opposite side to concoct a crude zoom. In total about 3 inches long with the lense in front.

I worked out the f-stop to be around f16. The shutter speed is totally dependant on the available light. This picture was teken in bright sunlight - firstly to get maximum speed and secondly to get the pupil of the bird as small as possible. the angle is important in order not to cast shade on the eye while the lense is practicaly 1-2cm away from the bird. I have taken many of these since most pigeon breeders will die for a shot like this of their champion racer or breeding birds.

I trust I dont bore you all with this detail - I can write you pages about the eye theories and the different elements of the eye. One intersting fact is that the network of veins is quite unique to pigeons because they act as a type of "radiator" to cool off the brain of the pigeon during prolonged flights. These veins are directly connected to the brain by a fairly massive artery. The thicker the veining of the pigeons eye, the better is its chances on marathon flights of 1000km's plus.

Thanks all for the marvelous comments - quite unexpected. I may post a few more since the variation in colours is astounding.

Kind regards
Joggie

This is stunning - I really appreciate the effort you've put in to getting this photo - the result is fabulous - not only the firey reds and yellows of the eye - but also the skin and feathers around it - I'm off to find some bird seed right now...

Your "macro" work is spectacular. This is really outside of my range of expertise, but I can appreciate the sharpness, and the colours. How would you like a 16X24 inch version of this staying at you from the wall????? How did you come up with this method to photograph the pidgeon???

INCREDIBLE!

no other word for it - i was convinced by the thumbnail it had to be a crocodile or lizard or something - Never would I have guessed it to be a pigeon.

I agree about the colours - I never would have imagined it.

Cannot find any other words to decribe it - just incredible!

Steve

Wow! This is simply stunning, it looks like a pool of coloured liquid swirling round. I commend you on your ability to take something so normal and turn it into an interesting and captivating image.

Thanks
