Oh no, don't buy a different lens! The 50 mm lens is a wonderful portrait lens on a digital camera. It is actually my favorite lens and is on my camera almost all the time. The only thing to keep in mind is it has a large aperture of f/1.4 (or f/1.8) and that means very little depth of field. So you need to focus presicely. If you stop it down to f/5.6 it is much less critical. But to me the small DOF is what I love about this lens. It creates a wonderful soft look without compromising in quality or looking all soft like "Hamilton".
The only "suggestion" I have is use the AF sensor that's on the eyes.

any suggestions on a different lens to buy? Thanks for your comments. She did look so sweet and I wish the pic would have come out sharper but that's what it's all about. Next time maybe I will get it better right?!?! thanks, jenni

don't worry about the focus. It can be extremely hard with that lens. The DOF is very small and even small movements need refocusing. I really don't mind that it is a little soft. Its so cute!
