Hi Omer, I like the 60's and 70's too, but this one is even older. 1949. One of my Dad's first cars. Andre

Thanks John, I do remember this car quite well. I was about eight years old when my dad owned it. It was built like a tank! Andre

Hi Kes, This is one of my favourites for a lot of reasons. Did you read the about? This is scanned from an old family snapshot. Then I used a little poetic license in Photoshop. I agree, it has a real nice mysterious story kind of look to it.
I went back and took a photo of my current car in almost exactly the same spot. I posted the image in the comments section in a reply to someone else.
Lots of fun with this old image :) Andre

It's perfect, Andre. Lots of mystery here...there might be someone in the car...a dark figure walking down the road...why did they stop?... Love the tones. Kes

Thanks for visiting Paul. And for the comments! It's hard for me to believe that this image comes from a scanned photo that is less than 3x5 inches and almost 50 years old. I could have just posted a straight scan with all the imperfections and that would have had it's own charm. But, I wanted to see what I could do with it. It might not be perfect, but I'm very happy with the results and it is one of my personal favourites. Andre

Mark, Coincidentally, I take that route to work every workday. I've often thought of reproducing the shot, and just got around to it on Sunday. Andre

That really is a coincidence It's nice to be able to go back to the same place. There's something sacred in being able to do that.

Hi Mark, It was the fifties alright! I'm not 100% sure about the camera. It might have been my dad's Yashicamat 120 Twin Lens Reflex with the standard 80mm lens. I took many shots of family members with that camera, but it probably wasn't me that took this shot. I would have been only 7 years old. Here is something intresting. It's quite a coincidence that you picked this one to comment on because I went back to this spot just yesterday morning and took this shot. 49 years later, same place, one of my cars. Andre

It really does look like the 1950's. I wonder too, what camera was used.

Thanks for your reply, Andre, I really liked this image without knowing much about it, it stands on its own, but the personal story makes it so much more appealing.

Thanks again Ina, This one is definitely a personal favourite of mine. This one really is vintage. Scanned from the original and altered slightly in Photoshop. (Sepia etc.) The photo was taken in an area just north of Toronto that is now almost completely surrounded by new development. I have photos of my own first new car in this exact spot taken in 1969. This shot however was taken much earlier 1956 I believe. Dad and I used to park the car on the side of the road and go fishing in the Rouge River. Many of my current photos are withing a couple of miles of this spot. Andre

Very nice car and great image - looks vintage. I love the mood: the road, the dark tones. It looks rainy and foggy. Well done!

Hi Toni, You haven't been around much lately. Thanks for picking one of my recent favoutites to comment on. I really like the way this one turned out. The best thing about it for me is that I can take what I've learned doing this one and apply it to so many of my old family heirloom type photos. And, the bonus is you still get to keep the original. Hi Fadel,
I really appreciate your comments. Especially on the older images. I know you have told me before that you think I am lucky to have such a rich archive. A never take it for granted. It is one thing to be able to look at old snap shots and have the memories come back to you. But, quite another much more powerful thing to re-work them in Photoshop and bring out whole new dimensions to them. It's like they are brand new again. When we have company over, I set up a slide show on the pc with a lot of old re-done photos on it and people love re-living the memories. Andre

Hi Thilo, You got it! I was trying to create that sort of dreamy soft look that this style of camera gives. I am very happy with the results, even if some people might think it is too soft or too dark or not perfect enough. I posted the original print as well in small format. I really like the background landscape details in this shot too. Andre

Hi Stefan, You may have had too much coffee, but you are also right about the image being a little banged up, or worked on. Here is the original that I started with, for reference. Some of the damage is on the original print, and some may be my doing. I still like the results though. Andre

Hi Frank, The image was scanned from a very small old photo, so I had a choice. Keep the image small, or blow it up a bit and take the loss in image quality. I chose to blow it up and try and create a softer, dreamier look that seems to go well with these old antique style photos. Andre

Thanks Philip, The original photo was taken in late 1956. The car is a 1949 Dodge. I agree, the road is a very important part of this scene, especially with the bridge and lone walker. Something else I like about this is the tree at the left of the image. All these things seem to bring some balance to the photo. Andre

Super job on the edits. Only thing is that it (the image) looks a little banged up here and there, as if too much smoothing or something (in the grille for instance). Or it could be I need another cup of coffee.
