About
Opened in 1916, the 25th Street Traffic Bridge (also known as the University Bridge) was three years in the building and suffered from delays, bankruptcies, and legends of corruption and mismanagment. The story is told that the original contractor underbid the job (he did) and mixed straw in with the concrete to make it go farther, forcing one of the piers to have to be demolished and re-poured (he did not - they were using a wet mixing process that was unsuitable to the job at hand. But the pier *did* have to be re-poured). Equally untrue (but damned colourful) is the tale of the luckless worker who fell into the form for one of the piers and is entombed there forever...
