Yes, but get up early while there wings are covered with dew. After they dry off they are on there way. Try chilling in the fridge overnight in a jar if you have a capture. Set up your camera and lighting and THEN place the butterfly on the flower. This gives you fro 5 to 15 minutes to compose and shoot.

I've heard from another photographer as well that you can catch buterflies and place them on a flower at night and they will still be there in the morning until it warms up enough to fly away... have you ever tried this? Thanks so much for the advice!

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your kind comments. I used a tripod mounted D-SLR for this shot and focused manually. That is the way to go for sharp images. Also pay close attention to the light source and shoot as early in the morning as possible while these little guys are still half asleep. A cool morning really helps too. I hope this helps you and wish you the best with your shoot.
Cheers - Bill

Wow! Such sharpness and detail!!! How long did you have to wait to capture this? I am hoping to go to the Vancouver Aquarium soon to take in their butterfly world display and capture some nice butterfly shots... any advice you can offer?

I caught one of these yesterday - had no idea what they were - assumed it was a moth not a butterfly but that was the extent of my knowledge :) Lovely capture - excellent colours and detail Margaret
