Great shot Kevin, I hate those fences ;) Even shooting through the fence, this is remarkably clear and a great capture.

Kevin,
Yes, do not shoot through a fence! lol...
You did very well shooting through the fence, but avoid it at all costs...
Ask people to, "Please let me get a good shot" and most folks will get out of the way... Except Us "Red Necks"... LOL

That is an awesome Drag picture! I have tried using slow shutter speeds but I cannot seem to get a crisp picture because I have had to shoot thru a fence as you can see in my photos. Maybe it's my lens!Maybe it's my technique. I am new to photography and have a lot to learn. Do you have any suggestions on shooting through a fence?
Thanks for your suggestions Kevin

Kevin,
Try to shot with slow film and a slow shutter speed. ISO 100 @ 1/125, or 1/60... My 1st shots were boring shot a 1/250, or 1/500...
The following photo is around 1/125 and panning is very important... Get good at panning with no vertical movement...

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try the larger aperature. I have been using the shutter priority mode and setting it at 500 so I could get some blur from the wheels to simulate speed. The aperature was set automatically by the camera. How high can I set the shutter speed and still get the blur of the wheels to show motion?

Actually not that bad. I'm not sure what you used, but you might try a larger aperture (smaller number)and increase the shutter speed. It has been a LONG time since I have taken any racing photos, and I approached it quite differently than many. I used very slow slide film ( Kodachrome 64 usually) and panned for almost every shot. Having a motor drive helped, but I used a lot of film. $$$$$$$$$ My best advice would be to go to some local amateur races to practise your technique. You have more ops to move and explore different angles than at pro events.
