About Reupload once again. Ian Pearson and Karen Clarke had some suggestions and ive done some changes. Ive kept it in color this time and cropped abit harder (Ians suggestions) and also kept the setting of higher contrast (Karens idea). I dont upload this shot because he look cute but because im very new at photographing wildlife animals and want honest and hard critique on this shot. What is bad/good with it?

Handheld, Bad light, 1/160 sec - F/2.8, Iso 200, 200mm

Patrick J

The first thing I noticed opening your page is a lot of BIPs :) Very well deserved! I did not see the other version, but I sure you made the right tunings, this image is very nice, I would have liked more DOF, but I can imagine how hard is to take photos like this and finally I?m not a wildlife shots expert ;) Ciao, Max

Well, considering I have never seen a squirrel in my life I can't really help you here..LOL!! I hear they are a damn nuisance....but I still think they are too cute...LOL!!

So this little black duck is just going to enjoy the cuteness of this image. Okay?

I don't know much about animal photography...
so for me the DOF is well chosen...

does professionals in this area see it in a similiar way...don't know

Cheers,

It was taken near a little house in a very dense forest. The shot was taken around 17.00 (5 in the after noon). So there were very little light and i started using flashes but his eyes look very unnatural (the autored function that works on humans didnt do a good job here.. hehe).

It was nice that he stayed around so i could take some photos.. good to learn photography to photo as much as possible and ofcourse different kind of things/styles. I havent done much animalshots before at all.

Here is another shot of the little fellow for you.

Regards,

Patrick J

I think because the image is dark overall, had caused problems for you in contrast with the b&w version. Armando's version is okay, a bit bright for my taste. Ian did a good job toning down the blue by adding a bit of green. I would probably just desaturate the colors a bit. But then it is a nature shot, and you do want things to appear like it should. That being said, I think I like your version the best. The shallow dof is also fantastic, something that I struggle with my camera at times. I think compositionally it is nice, it was really nice of the squirrel to stand there so that the lines in the pavement go diagonal. Was this taken in the shade? in early morning? I think you've done great here my friend, much better than any attempts I have ever made~

Patrick Jacobson   {K:29151} 7/19/2005
It sure works better without all the blue... I didnt work much with the colorbalance at all. Thank you for this version! =)

Aye.. it wasnt easy to hold it still.. i have a few photo where i used the flash but i had to put the flash straight on the little fellow and it didnt end up so good.. so i tried to take a few shots without flash and most of them got sharp infact. More luck with the sharpness i think though! =)

Thank you for taking your time to comment on the different version and for doing a new one!

Cheers

Hi Pat,Looking at your camera settings I'm surprised you managed to get such a great shot with hand held and 1/60 on telephoto.I like the crop on this one and the colour is great. I had a go at adjusting the colours to tone down the blue in Photoshop, as I think that this shade of green is more complimentary to the red/brown of the squirrel's fur.Don't know if it will meet with approval.regards Ian Pearson

Thank you Armando for your comment and for doing a new version. I agree that its abit dark but i didnt want the white fur on the front of him to be burned out.. so i kept it abit darker.

Cheers
