About Well, it's supposed to have been... Together with the Victorian tower at a nearby waterworks, this 96ft. (30m.) tower, known locally as Perrott's Folly, may have been the inspiration for J.R.R.Tolkien's 'Two Towers of Gondor'. It's situated in the Edgbaston/Ladywood area of Birmingham and was originally built by John Perrott in 1758. Although born in South Africa, Tolkien himself had close connections with the Birmingham area and Sarehole Mill (now within the city boundary) is often credited with having given him the idea for the 'Shire' home of the Hobbits.

Thanks for commenting, Marian. Not quite the sort of architecture usually associated with Birmingham, but of some interest, I hope...

Best wishes,

Len

As far as I know, Lily, it was just a 'folly' - put up because someone wanted to put up a tower. It wasn't an uncommon practice, though this one (1758) is earlier than many that are found in Britain.

Thanks for commenting.

A storybook tower. Wonderful architecture. Thanks for the informative about. Len, Do you know what the tower was originally used for? Adding it to my favorites.
