Very nice abstract by emphasizing the eyes, which suggests a giant head, rather than the relatively smallish head actually found on this (I think you're right about id, as well - dance fly, family Empididae). The eyes almost suggest little plastic discs, like something you'd get for furniture at Home Depot.
