Hi Tiffany, sweet shot. Nice capture of this little girl in vintage looking dress and hat with complimentery toning to enhance the flavour. I would agree with Andre's thoughts about this. Bright sun is a challenge and I rely a lot on bracketing. I have some shots right now that I'm afraid are unusable because of the harsh sunlight. I tried my hand here with curves and burn/contrast. I also did a crop, sometimes just cropping out more area of troubled exposure images at least makes less of it to distract from main subject. Anyway, hope I didn't overextend invitation for advice, but here is what I ended with.

Hi Tiffany, I think it is a real challenge to photograph in bright sunlight. There always seems to be something that doesn't want to co-operate as far as exposure is concerned. It is much easier to get nice shots in evening or morning light when the sun is at a more forgiving angle. Andre

Thanks Andre! I was also disappointed with the overexposure in areas of this shot to. I haven't used the bracketing function on my camera yet. I know I need to try it out. In this case I knew the shot was cute but only had one try and didn't have time to adjust the EV down before she moved. Thanks for the reminder to turn on the auto bracketing :)

I AM THINKING A SLIGHT LIFT IN PS IN CURVES WOULD BRING THIS ONE OUT A BIT MORE... THE TONES KIND OF MAKE IT ALL BLEND TOGETHER... Love the shot though :)

Hi Tiffany,
I have come back to this photo twice now without commenting because I'm not quite sure how to explain myself. But I will give it a try. First of all, I really like this shot! The composition, leading line of the fence, the pose of the little girl and the DOF causing the slight blurr in the background and the toning are all first rate. The one thing that kind of bothers me is the way the sunlight is so strong that it washes out the detail on the top of the hat and the top of the horizontal fence posts. I think the sun is also responsible for a little too much sharpness in the grass in the foreground. Do you see it this way on your screen too? Maybe a little too much contrast has caused this to happen? The reason I bring this up is because I struggle with this kind of thing myself. I find that if the exposure is not quite right and it is the only shot you have, the detail might not be on the file. If so, not much you can do about it. I'm trying to get into the habit of bracketing my shots when I get the time to try and avoid this problem. You may not agree but I would be interested to know what you think.
