Thanks for your comments Anthony...all I can say is it is a very small crop taken with a 300mm lens that is pretty notorious for being noisy in dark areas...as you say I don't think it detracts form the composition.I coulda used a noise reduction tool but they generally seem to detract from the overall presentation....it's always interesting and a challenge to create electronic images when the viewing device varies both in how it's set up and quality. I saved the photo back off of UF and magnified it several times using ACDSee finally see some pixelization after several maginifications....ps I have not tried to print it...I have the original and would use it as a source for printing.....I really appreciate your support and the great technical conversation..I'll also check out Neat Image..Thanks

Larry, I took a look again at this wonderful image and I must admit on my pro monitor I can now see a bit of noise in the green at upper left/mid-section, which does not detract from the beauty of the image at all. But from a technical viewpoint I am puzzled, given the ISO and small crop. Have you printed it out? "Neat Image" (a program which when carefully used is ASTOUNDINGLY good) made easy meat of it though. So, if you were planning on a BIG print...

Yes, I agree 100%, the simple answer is that you like it! All the rest doesn't matter much by comparison to that. And I like it too, please don't take my noise comment too much to heart. This is a great photograph that certainly deserves all the praise it's getting.
In fact, looking at this image on a better monitor (my usual monitor) I see much less noise, which seems odd. The monitor I used earlier was a cheaper monitor than my usual, and I'd have expected to detect less noise with the cheap monitor. But not the case here... Perhaps the scan and size of the cheaper monitor is not displaying the image very well, or something about this particular images color's doesn't mate well with that monitor...
In any event, I say above, a wonderful shot worthy of your excellent portfolio!
Mark

OK!...appreciate the analysis...I think I agree that noise is not necessarily a bad thing and can actually add to the composition...had I used PS noise reduction it woulda been pretty flat .....anyway the simple answer is I like it

Well, if I look for it, I can see it when I zoom in. The effect is beautiful as it is, though, and I could see it turning to plastic with any further processing. The great impressionist painters created entire paintings out of "noise," and so why not exploit the effect in photography? Mark's technical analysis is good, though, and worth considering, but I don't think it means that is the way to go. At the end of the day, each of us finds his own style (or should), and that is tied-up in our technical choices. (Oh, Lord, there I go again. Sorry!) Good luck --g

Light! Excellent choice of camera angle to capture the sunlight lighting this flower up from the inside! Great job! The photo is a little noisy. Perhaps you could try to despeckle a little. A choice of lower ISO might have helped, or perhaps the noise is visible because this is a close crop of a larger shot? I expect you needed to get some distance from the subject in order to get the buds in focus.
In any event, a wonderful shot, (and also a fantastic portfolio!)
