About
Cross-over stereo pair of a female Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus).
A vast amount of additional information is seen in this stereo pair. The web pulled tight against the underside of the spider's body, the genital tract (epigyne), the structure of the spinnarets and the plane of the web are all quite lost in the two dimensional images but spring into view in the 3D version. It is also quite noticeable how the 3D image contains so much more minute detail and how the out of focus parts of the spider in each single image miraculously vanish in the combined version.
This pair was taken with one camera using two shots about 3 cms from the spider and about 1 cm apart. No special equipment used, just a mirror to reflect sunlight back into the shadows.
3d viewing tip: Once the combined image is achieved bring your hands in from either side (and about 6 inches from your face) to mask the two outer images.
Using Internet Explorer? Then hit f11 for a better view.
NEWCOMERS TO 3D CROSS-OVERS.
To view this image in 3D (it really is worth the effort)look at the middle of your screen from a distance of about 6 inches and go cross-eyed (just like when you did at junior school). Now stay cross-eyed while moving directly backwards away form the screen. At a distance of about two feet your eyes will suddenly "go funny" and then the 3D image will pop into view.
Now keeping focus on the new image move further back until you are comfortable with it.
You are allowed to laugh out loud, everyone does first time they "click" with cross-over 3D. You may need to try it two or three times before success.
Once you have the 3D image inview, it can be more comfortable in the early days to bring your hands in from either side to mask the two outer none-3D images.
