This ship was a real odd ball. It was originally built as an amphibious warfare vessel. Specifically it was a tank landing ship (LST). As the need developed for close fire support during amphibious landings, a number of LST's were converted to carry 8 multiple rocket launchers and a 5".38 cal gun. after the war was over, there wasn't much use for them, so into the mothballed fleet they went. I think this was the last one kept around before scrapping.

When I took the kids to my sister's place in Corpus Christi, we went over an old WWII aircraft carrier that has found its last resting place there. The kids loved it, especially the motley fleet of planes on the deck. These old ships have a real atmosphere about them...
