About A desperate boy standing out amongst the croud scrambling for scraps to eat. It seems as if the face on his T-shirt is looking outwards - to a future with hope while the expression of desperation on his face suggests that he cannot overcome the hopelesness of the scene behind him. Here adults, teenagers and even babies scramble for food amongst the waste at the municipal dumpsite.

Currently about seventeen families live here, they are outcasts from their respective suburbs due to some misbeahviour in the past. These people are the poorest of the poor and will literally eat anything. Here they crowd among a truck full of old vegetables not fit for sellng at the market. This is my first visit to the site and I am determined to work towards a sustainable solution to help them get back their dignity and start living and enjoying life as normal people - especially the many children trapped in these atrocious circumstances.

Anybody on Usefilm who are serious about this and want to become involved in real solutions are welcome to contact me at joggievs@telkomsa.net

Again, you did well here and captured a harsh unforgiving mood and environment very well, Joggie. A powerful photo...

An excellent documentary-type photo, Joggie, and one that really stirs the emotions.
I'd like to help you with the 'real solutions' you're working on, but my wife and I are already involved in various kinds of relief projects both as individuals and with the church. However, may God help you as you seek to do your best to help these poverty-stricken people.
My best regards, Chris

Technically I like the toning for this as it's very fitting to the subject. This is one of those thousand word pictures. Such a striking contrast between the boy's face and the one on the shirt. Also disconcerting realizing comparable situation for us who are fortunate is fighting a crowded supermarket isle.

Excellent journalism work. I love the boy's face contrasts with the tshit he is wearing under his coat. Timless. Andree

Great photograph, first thing I noticed was the face in the t-shirt. Almost hiding the scene of what is going on behind. Very thought provoking photograph with many elements.

Hi Joggie,

EXCELLENT documentary type photograph.
Shows the sad situation these people must endure.

A thought provoking image, full of emotion.
The world should see more of these images.....
Then would something be done?

Very well done Joggie,
Lori :)
