About Subject background: Although I changed my frequency with image uploads a bit to a more lose version, here is some fresh stuff from the zoo.

As for the subject: Well, I hope I don't end up speaking with my mirror image. It's not that a mirror image isn't true to you - it's even more true than probably some of the so-called friends. But this image really makes me sad. there is some peacefullness, but also some sadness. What's your impression?

PS concept: BW conversion, mainly. the fur was extremely difficult with the details.

This is just outstanding Thilo, you almost want to know what the bear is thinking :-)

Great idea to turn to B&W - very powerful image indeed. And I love it :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

hi, the clarity of the reflection is exquisite!...i can't get over it and it keeps me looking....i think Mr.Polar is asleep...but i do feel badly for animals in zoos and appreciate it when zoos create more natural habitats at least...Seattle has a pretty good set up for the larger animals...very well composed and the overall tonal range looks good to me...
(i have a title in German tonight ;>) hugs,gayle

Definitely full of sadness and expressions, and BW suits it perfectly. I like the idea of your recent images, I even thought of doing something similar time ago for the people that affected my work but I then I was afraid to fail :)

Nice... looks like the bear's sharing a secret with its own reflection. Very poetic, Thilo.

Hi Verena,

"sensible giant" wäre natürlich eine schöne alternative gewesen ;-)

so beautiful dear thilo but little sad, i think it must be live in its natural living. BW feels this, too.

ich sehe was Du meinst...aber ich finde es eher spannend zu sehen wie er mit seinem Spiegelbild kommuniziert...

sehr sensibel für einen Giganten...

Hi Antonio,

the Tamron is great with the focal lenght, but the aperture is a bit weak. it goes from 3.5 to 6.3.

Wonderful reflection Thilo... The composition is excellent and the texture and detail of the fur is great... Poor bear... he was so peacefully sleeping and here we are analysing him...HEHEHEHEH... But yes... The way its paws are hanging and the position of the head give a message of sadness and loneliness... but yet maybe he is having just pleasan dreams... and that is why he is so peaceful and abandoned... :)

Let's see the positive side... Either way... sad or pleasant... you shot a great shot...

Cheers,

MaLuisa

wow, excellent tonal range in this BW and very nice animal, photo, reflections; nice to see the performance of that lens too, which is the smallest f/number?

great reflection, Thilo! I hope that the bear is doing well in this zoo, and he just taking a nap after his bath on a hot day :)

Hi Thilo,
I have to admit, there was a little trick journalism on my part to get that sad effect with the bars. My shot was taken in a kind of holding area, not the area where the bears are on display to the public. That area is much nicer and more natural looking. (still sad though)

Hi Andre,

oh wow, this is a sad shot... In Nuernberg, the bears have a more natural environment. there is glass around the area, no real metal cage.

thanks for adding the image.

Hi Thilo,
This shot looks great! Like you said, it is very difficult to do a good job on white fur or white feathers. You have paid a lot of attention to the detail. (equally in the reflection)
Wonderful shot all round.

To answer the question on how it makes me feel... I agree with you. Sadness is the mood. Even though the animal could be at peace with himself, there is always a certain amount of sadness seeing these beasts in captivity.

A few months ago, I posted a photo of a young polar bear cub that I took about 1979 at the Toronto Zoo. I'll attach a small version. I think mine is more depressing than yours, with no peacefullness present. I took mine down, because there was not much interest at the time.
I really like the reflection in yours!

It's a beautiful photo. I don't find it sad at all. He looks very mellow and not a little self-absorbed. Very nice . . .

Best regards,

Looks as if he is disappointed with himself, and can't stand to see his own face. I like how the water and reflection are darker-exposing the inner darkness that lies within everyone. Nice work~

Hi Thilo! My impression is that this fellow is extremely sad, longs so much for its natural environment ... it almost hurts to look at this capture, which has excellent fur details and tones. Good work!

They don?t ??? Ok, but how come i never look like the face i see in the mirror as rthe one i see on images of my self? Ok, another story i suppose ;)!!!! This shot are very peaceful and give an idea that the bear are nice and friendly and in there lie the falsehood....as the ironic title suggest. It seems like he are mirrorig him self and meanwhile dreaming about hime self on the ice instead of there. Great reflection and the compo are very good as well as the tones.

Beautiful capture Thilo, I like your tones, you really accomplished great details in the fur, and a good exposure too. I also think it's a little sad, because he's all alone..and his pose is sad, kind of has the look of abandon, not caring anymore..I like the composition and the reflections. I keep trying to find the wall that's reflected in the water...very nicely done...hugs, Linda
