Hi Anthony, speaking of Americana and nostalgia, I discovered Ann Texter: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/53076.html
I think you'll like her portfolioalong the same lines, I did!

Ina, at one level I agree with you: I find composition instinctive, in the sense that I have a reasonably good "eye". What I find difficult is the final "post-production" bits. Hopefully one gets it right first time for the most part when the photo is taken, but cropping to me IS difficult, and I find myself to-ing and fro-ing, Thank you very much for your advice - I shall bear it in mind and heartily agree that rules in creativity can be counter-intuitive sometimes :) Otherwise, we'd never have had the likes of artists like Dali and Picasso bleh! Nor indeed composers like Debussy, Ravel, Satie. I see you at this moment chomping at the bit till you can upload your latest masterworks hehe!

Hi Anthony, composition is NOT hard, it has to do with the visual weight of objects. Colors, saturation and shapes combine to give visual weight, ie - your red sign is the "heavy" object, but the bright blue sky at the top balances the weight. However, dark & warm colors "weigh" more than light and cool colors. Line composition is the same: heavy vs lightweight. That's my theory, although I never think of it, I just look. Rules are made to be broken, especially in art. Re: Andy Warhol, the man was a genius. But I like all artists, from any moment in time. There's very few I don't like, can't think of any. I wanted to do something special for 9-11, but I couldn't find anything relevant in my portfolio.

Oh yah - and as you can see, I positioned the sun behind the sign and I found its subtle halo appealing too.

Ina - I like your crop, thank you. I was wondering along similar lines. Do you think the pole and lines (haha) above add anything? I'm not sure; I wanted a biggish sky above to somehow oppress the now moribund signage. Composition is hard!

Indeed Maureen :-)

When are you going to compile a portfolio?

Anthony

I have exactly two more hours until I can upload my pictures. This thing is turning me into a Pavlov dog. Meanwhile, I have a crop of your picture - it would fit nicely into the Square Project!

Hi Anthony, I came from communist Romania - now *that* was an Orwellian country! You're right about uniformity setting in, but in most cases that is consumer/market driven. I have read your statement and I agree - well put!
I became a donor last night (couldn't take anymore) so it's not "another day another picture" anymore - it's three pictures - fun, fun, fun.

TY Ina - we have turned into a bilateral thingy here! hehe. I found this image striking and rather sad - this diner has fallen victim to global corporate power, blandness and uniformity. Have u ever read "1984" by Orwell? I'm sure u have.

Nice piece of Americana, Anthony, with all its imperfections. Gone are the days... but the colors are still bright.
