Hi Ann The caves have always been Buddhist temples. The cave openings arent very deep and statues were carved directly into the rock wall.

What a fascinating place. I wonder what these caves were used for in thier day. Looks like it could have been some sort of fort or some such thing. I've been to a lot of places but not to China. Lately I've been seeing some amazing photos which is prompting me to visit. Awesome structure and although I usually prefer colour iamges the B&W enhances the dramatic element for me. Thanks again for yet another very interesting photo.
Cheers - Ann :)

Very interesting. He must pass it by on a daily basis. It is so funny how the usual surrounding can becoming less appreciated. Great piece with excellent details from top to bottom!

Zounds indeed. 2,300 caves, and 110,000 statues have been identified. More than half of the carvings at Longmen date from the Tang Dynasty period (A.D. 618--907).
