I'm highly impressed with the sharpness of this shot. I disagree with Mirek's assertion that it is overexposed since, unless you are shooting a full moon, a portion will always be either over or underexposed. It just depends on which part of the moon you are trying to highlight. I've always felt the ones that expose the shadowy portion just between light and dark sides (as this one does) are the most interesting. Looking forward to seeing some tripod shots. Maybe I'll head up to the mountains myself this weekend...

Hi Kevin!
I saw this shot the other day, and it inspired me. It was 7pm, I took my camera, the tripod and the 75-300mm (x 1.6 in my EOS 20D) and I photographed the moon. What I found out is that among the 30 pictures I took, the best ones are those with high shutter speeds (between 100 and 250/s) and wide aperture (4 - 5.6). Well, I didn't know the moon was so bright...
I'll post it tomorrow. I hope you like it if you get to see it.

Kevin, for a hand held shot presumably at 400mm focal length this is an incredibly sharp shot. Even with a tripod it is not easy. I've uploaded one recently using a tripod and I still find to obtain decent sharpness I need to use a remote control. Just the action of pressing the shutter button sets up movement which over this distance is like an earthquake. But as I said, given the circumstance it is a great result.

it was an exersize in seeing just howmsharp the moon would be (hand holding the camera,so I am looking forward to better results possibly with the tripod (Danny)

I wonder why you made it difficult for yourself... a tripod would be a natural choice for this subject. But if you wanted to test how steady your hand was, well, it's VERY steady! Congratulations.

This picture has been attempted by various UF members already with, in my opinion, better results. To me it looks overexposed, especially in the lower left quarter and out of focus, but If Your goal was to try Your steady hand, then I am amazed with Your shot. I have hard time believing that it was shot without any support.
