You are (sort of) right on the flash. I used an 550ex pointing straight up with the funny little bit of plastic sticking out which causes the catchlights in the eyes. The lighting does make it tricky - I tend to go with the flow and try to fix whatever I can in photoshop. This was is dark on my work PC, looks OK on my one at home and in a print though..

Nice portrait, only maybe a bit dark. Judging by the look of the shot, you didn't use flash; on purpose? In my experience shooting portraits in Africa's really difficult because of the strong contrasts: very bright sun and dark housing, and also the dark skin makes it difficult to chose the right lighting. Any tips?
