About We were given an assignment to take some images with different exposures of an area that had a good mixture of white and shadow areas. (to be used for practicing dodging and burning in the darkroom) Once I got set up with the tripod. An old guy in his overcoat decided to stroll right through my set-up. I would have liked him a little deeper into the shot. But I'll take this.

Thanks Roland,
This was one of those lucky shots that just happened.
The original assignment was to set up a tripod and take several different exposures of some things with lines, shadows and textures. The man walked in front of my tripod at just the right time for me.
The shots of the structure alone were purely for class discussion on exposure. The walking man was a bonus!

In addition to Mark's comment I would include the lines of the facade (House) that draws you to the lone figure, this wouldn't have the same impact without him. Excellent contrast & nice range of tones. Thanks you so much Andre for your kind words to my image, indeed the capture was split second & fleeting, not an easy task especially when your dealing with crowds & have virtually limited room to work on, best wishes.

Thanks Magnus,
This one was as someone mentioned a "happy mistake" The strolling man was not intended, but he became the "star" :)

I was just visiting your portfolio because of Thilo's post. I will be going back for another look and to comment on some.

Hi Rashed,
Don't worry about your English Rashed. I am embarassed to say that English is the only language I can communicate in.
I think I know what you mean though. You are probably thinking many different things in your native tongue and feel frustrated that you can not communicate your full thoughts in English to English speaking people.
As far as I am concerned, you always make yourself understood. :)

Thanks Ray,
I do tend to be my own worst critiic sometimes. At times, before posting or showing a print to someone, I will dwell on the negative aspects for a long time, making myself get tired of it. Then a couple of weeks later, after being away from it a while, I see the image like new again, and I wonder what I was worried about.

To get perfection in all our photography Andre would mean the need to hire extras and pose them in all the strategic positions of our shots. Not pratical and far far less fun than these chance captures.. I like this one Andre and we must never dwell on the 'if onlys' in these situations.

I love the simplistic idea of the shot and the end result has some wonderful tonal contrasts. Well done to you my friend (and for front paging it again)all the very best...Ray

Thanks Kevin,
You don't think it would be a little better if there was a little space between his shoulder and the boarded up window?
The white marks are something in the grass. That's pretty easy to fix.
I think I might have prefered if his feet were in the shot too. But now that you say that, maybe it isn't so important.
This was a lucky shot though. He was completely oblivious to me shooting the building for an entirely different reason. He wasn't in the plan :)
Anyway thanks for the nice comments. I'll take a near "masterpiece" any day :)

Thanks Lars,
I said this before too.. I wish I had waited until he took three or four more steps befoe I snapped this shot. It would have improved the shot an awful lot. That way his feet wouldhave been in the shot and he would have been closer to the building, allowing the lines to be even more effective. The next shot that I took, he was over to the left and very poorly exposed, so I won't bother posting that one.
Thanks for visiting.

...i have to diagree...his position is as if you planned it - the intersection of his shoulder with the corner of the window and the way his feet fade into the left corner shadow - as good as it gets - perhaps just get rid of the white spots in the shadow areas to the left and you will indeed have a masterpiece in my eyes - K

I know others have said this, but I need to say it as well. The lines in this photo are outstanding and draw me right in to the man. Very nice composition and well done!

Thanks Shady,
I was smiling all the time he was walking slowly through my set-up camera. I couldn't have planned it better. All together I took about 12 shots, and he is in two of them.

Thanks Jan,
The assignment worked out fine. I knew I got lucky when he decided to walk right in front of the camera.

Hi Endre,
Yes, the real simple one is the one without the man in the picture :)
That was a little too stark, but some people might like it also.

Thanks for the nice detailed comment Mark,

It's always nice when someone goes to the trouble of explaining why they wanted a larger look at an image.
Thanks again.

Agree, maybe would be better had he been sligtly deeper in the image, but a very nice work in any case, Andre.
Great simpliciy, excellent contrasts.
Like this shot.

The lines created by the shingles that are running at the viewer, along the right edge of the image is so powerful, and its what drew me to look at your photo.
Nicely composed, and a happy accident with the old gentleman walking across your set up.
Terrific!
