Ah, so there you are :) Yep, still like it best. The shallow DoF is what drew me to this image in the first place. So for me, your intent paid off. Another reason why this appeals to me more than the others, is simply the lily's 'pose'. She's just there, no fancy angles or crops, saying "Here you go, this is me".
As for the background colour, I prefer the elegance of black and it does seem to provide a fullness to the image. However I can see situations where the delicate simplicity of a white background would be more appropriate... Perhaps as the only image on a wall in a minimalist's home?

Hello Michael,
Both captures are lovely. Black backgrounds seem always give the flower the 'pop', even black & white flower studies have that extra drama when put to a black base canvas.
Personally, I prefer white BGs which give a softer more natural contrast. Agree with others the dof you've manged to freeze and caputre is perfectly handled.
So long as we are in this 'honest' corner, for my taste I find the points of the flower (the main point here!) a little too sharp....if that makes any sense? Maybe a slighter hand on the USM would give the overall flower an easier blend?

After seeing your tulip photograph "the dark side" I think I'll have to take even more photographs of flowers. Besides, it is your namesake...

I'm going for gold.... eh black!! Because with the white background the flower almost 'dissolves' into it, which can be a neat effect if you're going for that... ;-D Love the shallow DOF (just getting that 'point' sharp is great), nice soft colors, neat shot(s)... well done!! And Hugo found that the black had more 'body' as he put it... well it ever so slightly bigger/closer to the camera... ;-D

All effects are in camera. Same F-Stop, same shutter speed, and taken only minutes if not seconds apart.
The black background seems to be preferable so far, we'll see what the general opinion is as this ages.
All the other shots posted so far have a black background.

Hi Mike,
Even though I'm not a floral kind of guy (I think they're in the same league as cat images), I do like the creativity in this one. The two almost identical photos and the opposite tone of the background creates a very good feel to the effect. Also very interesting to see how the flower against the black background seems to have a bit more body. Must be an optical illusion... Just curious about the difference in exposure times...:) Good shot, and very well handled. Sounds like a good theme to elaborate on!
