The Hoya CP was a lie indeed and therefore I thank you for the compliment.
My own 'Photography Turf' is being on this side of the World way out in the Middle of the Pacific to enjoy and relax in so you can keep the Front Page of this Site while I keep on shooting Real Estate Photography continously to make the Front AND Rear Pages of Magazines shooting Multi-Million Dollar Buildings and Residences here in Paradise ... Okay? Anyway, I wouldn't want to 'Burst Your Bubble' nor 'Sink Your Ship' because I don't really know how emotional you might get and then have to seek 'Psycho Social Counseling' ... You know what I mean ... Right?:))
Now that we have all the Bureaucratic Redtape out of the way let us get down to the 'Business' of this image of yours and I do call it 'Business' because of one of your remarks in the 'About' after the 'Ingrediants', but I'll get to that later ... Alright?
Just to keep you in suspense I am going to take a break now because my Brachial Plexis is killing me and I don't want to time out on what I have already written if that is okay with you medically and I'm already up to 1,355 Characters anyway.

2. You are on the Front Page today with 'PHOTO OF THE DAY' after a tremendously long absence having contributed nothing to this Site for along while, but which I do Congratulate you on.
So, ... are you ready for a real critique in every way? I thought so because you are just that kind of guy knowing that I 'Shoot from Hip' in a B&W way knowing very well that the 'Grey' is not safe, although I promise not too kill the cow ... Alright?:))

The cows stupid expression is cool, but maybe you should've let the cow come a little closer (hehe I know its a little scary)to get more detail on his slimey mouth, I love those dreads of slime.

Great effect Hugo! I like the angel and colors are great! Also like the added touch of the grass in the foreground! I was out shooting cows this morning myself and working on a series of photos on the oklahoma cattle. I nice wide angel lens would surely come in handy!

Just love this shot Hugo, the perspective is A-1, glad you weren;t trying to get a shot of the back end whilst lying on the ground, could be dangerous!! Great colour and light, perfect crop, oh look....to cut a long story short I think everything about this is great and can well imagine it huge on someone's wall (tho' not sure why you would want a...) anyway, great work!!

thanks for your thumbs up, it's great to hear from you every now and then.... I had a great time shooting these creatures - so patient and curious!
I got a real laugh when I was shooting another group of cows and a car appeared - my 1973 classic Citroen car was blocking the very narrow road. It turned out to be a ranger, more curious in what on earth I was doing there than anything else. They just came checking up on that guy who seemed to be struggling in a ditch somewhere out in the fields after having an accident with a really old car....:) Ended up in a great chat - they showed me all the good spots in that area.

Hahaha...a great dramatic portrait, love the perspective and the distortion...excellent light and clarity...love that blade of grass in his mouth and oh my what a big nose he has. A great through the grass shot...in the muddy ditch. It's great to have those that go before us...I do agree with you a catch light in the eye would be better, but when you do this kind of shot you sometimes have to get what you can...it's enjoyable for sure...well done:)

A fantastic perspective of a cow you've caught here & I think this must be the most humane way to shoot one.. lol.
7/7 deserved for the bravery behind this one (hope you didn't get stepped on!) I've always had this fear of cows (they used to gang up on me as a child believe it or not) but this photo... well.. can't help but like it... you can even see the moisture on the nose of this beast.
Excellent shot, only amazed this one has not been hung in your awards section x

Sometimes I can get on, usually not. After 36 yrs. in Alaska, we ended up in Ohio, of all places! It's been quite a ride. Thank you for responding to my photo.

This is a great POV and a wonderful composition. Excuse me if I repeat some commentary already made but with 69 critiques by some VERY good photographers you likely don't need my amateur two cents worth anyway and I really haven't the time to read them. Never-the-less, here it is.
Your 'about' section is freakin' hilarious! Somebody wants a 2x2 meter print? (And I thought I was bizarre)!
I like the sky, clouds, Perspective, and look of serious introspection on this proud, bovine face! I would pull out the whites on the eyes a tad bit more and likely increase the grass saturation as well. A reflector to add some upward light to the underside would be a good touch (if possible).
All in all, this is a very Moooooh-ving portrait!! Doesn't seem like your kind of thing . . . but very cool.

Phillip did a nice job with the PS edit of the two wayward grass stalks, but I like the eyes in the original a bit better. The PS'd eyes are a little bit scary, lol!

"Milka" would definitely sell more of its chocolate with this/your cow ;)
The angle is absolutely GREAT. Although the shooting circumstances may not have been very comfortable, I guess they were necessary to get this extraordinary photo result.
The lack of detail in the cow's face may be a critique, but to me it's irrelevant because the most important element here in this photo is the angle which I think can NOT be topped.
I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed/mentioned this "problem" if I hadn't read about it in the comments.

Had a look at different comments: the suggestion to 'lighten' the eyes... I'm not too sure... it makes the cow look scared or really amazed (I can imagine that last one... who's that silly guy in the ditch... LOL)!!! I think when you've enlarged it to 2x2 (maybe even on linnen??) it makes a fantastic and 'natural' image, with a few irregularities... but that's life!!! All in all... love it... can see it on a wall but it won't be one of mine... (my place is way too small... LOL)!!!

Fabulous perspective and highly original wide angled look at this animal. I love the great thought that went into this difficult study and I think you have done well considering the light source was dead against you. I love the rich blue sky and the cotton wool clouds for background.
I am sure that if 5400 could speak she would tell you that she enjoyed the experience of seeing a human down on his knees paying homage to her albeit with some strange looking foodstuff that made strange clicking noises:):):) Well done to you dear Hugo a very pleasing piece of work. Hugo, I had been thinking of doing such a photo - it is a classic! This sets a very high standard! Excellent control of the tonal range! Ultra wide angle lenses tend to blow out the sky and clouds, so you have done well, indeed. Oh yes, I find the image a humerous exaggeration of the essence of cow!

Hi Egidijan, you're sure you calibarated your monitor correctly? The eyes are just above the flies on her nose. It does need a bit of dodging, but they're quite visible on my screen...:)

I, too, agree with those things, but I'm fairly positive I can resolve those in photoshop. It was already fairly late when I took this photo; around 9pm - so the light was quite favourable, but direct sunlight. An overcast sky would undoubtedly make the exposure more easy, but IMO, the feathers and the blue sky add to the image. I agree with Manu about the saturation too, and I still need to apply the finishing touches.
As to your suggestion, at the time of your comment, I was actually shooting a brown cow - great minds think alike...

Welcome back Hugo! Excellent angle producing very interesting results. I like the inclusion of the grass culms in the foreground to add perspective. I agree on the problem of detail in the face - not sure if I agree with the recommendations. The problem here is the great contrast between the white clouds, white parts of the cow and shiny nose against the pitch-black skin over the face and main body. To balance these in full sunlight conditions will always be problematic and the PS shadow/highlight filter can help only to a certain point. My suggestion would be to redo the shot on an overcast day with less contrast or even better - go for a brown cow which would show off the face even better. (I know its not a perfect world and you may not have the time to go back - but sure worth a try! Regards.

I don't have a real critique other than I like the perspective. I'm sure it was tricky to get the lighting right with it being a sunny day. (looks like that anyway)
I also like what Phil changed except I wouldn't lighten the eyes so much.
Sounds like you had fun doing this shoot. No problem mixing it up a little bit. :)

Hugo, I think it would be so rewarding for someone to want one of my photos to use as a print.
It must be a great feeling for you that someone has chosen you to capture an image to decorate their home or office. Good on you!

I wish that I had the confidence to actually look into getting some of my collage images printed. However, I am constantly filled with doubts that anyone would, firstly, want one of my images in their home or office and, secondly, would want to pay for the priviledge!!!! LOL
What do you think of this one?

Hi Phil, this is not the sort of thing I do for a living, that's more product photography and editorials - or better, the combination between product development, marketing and product photography.
I did a few product shoots and brochure stuff with this guy, and we worked closely together for a while - and still are. That's how one thing lead to another... Come to think of it, this is the first time I've ever done anything like this, but I wouldn't mind doing it more often - it's a "I'll see what I can do" kind of deal, so no stress involved. The only preparation it took was to sketch a composition on a whiteboard, so I understood what he wanted. So when I headed out into "the open" last weekend, I drove past a field of cows, and jumped at the opportunity....

Thanks for your rework, I think you summed it up perfectly, and it includes all points I already discussed with my client - would've derived at an almost identical version to yours if this huge print would be hanging in my living room.
I'll definitely add the highlights in the eye, but they were happy with the tall grass - personally, I would remove it too, exactly as you suggested. I'd even consider a reshoot to reduce the amount of grass, but thankfully, that isn't needed...:)

Excellent composition and POV...it creates and demands attention. With regards to the shadow or lack of flash why not lift this area in PS...should be quite straightforward.
I feel the whole shot needs a little more saturation especially the sky and the grass....give at a real zing. Its a pretty comic shot so I think it could take some more saturation.
Still like it though and worth the stings and the smell of cow-poo...!

Your about is hilarious, your point of view unusual. Not surprisingly, there's a very puzzled look on this cow's face, although I can't see her eyes clearly. The blue of the sky is beautiful, the green of the grass a little subdued. This sure would make a striking 2x2m print!

Excellent angle making this cow look very unusual and funny, I think the exposure was clever in the first place given the black color of the cow, I also like Philip's version a lot with the eyes more visible which I think gives this cow the character. Beautiful work as always Hugo!

I know many cows I'd love to shoot. Sadly, not as attractive as this creature, but their chewing style is remarkably similar and that's a good enough reason as any. A 2x2 meter print? Wow, that's some bovine love for you...
Well, looks like most folk have had a go and there's not much I can add except to say I think it's a fantastic shot. And it is.
Sure, you could have used more fill, but do you really want to go full scale? I'm predicting this may lead to a real-life version of Phil's "whites in its eyes". Only, you won't see it or be able to capture it through the cow's hoof, which has come down squarly on your head because the beast is frightened out of its mind after being blinded.
But hey, it's your call...
Seriously, I'm always amazed at how much thought and effort you put into your work. Whether it be re-ordering nature's alchemy or getting right into the thick of it. It's all good and always a pleasure to see what you've been up to.

Wonderful portrait of this cow Hugo. I do like the low perspective to this, especially with the wide angle, but perhaps the blades of grass are a bit too long and can distract the eye. Never the less the overall feel of this photo is a winner. Nicely done.

A nice image, Hugo, captured from a great perspective!
I made a couple of changes to the image.
Firstly, I removed the small piece of vertical grass that is at the end of the horizontal piece of grass in its mouth.
Secondly, I took the top off of the grass just to the left of the cow's nostril.
And, lastly, I lightened the whites in its eyes. I may have overdone this a little, however, I think this change adds to the image.
Mate, I can assure you, I do not pretend to be some master of this art, just a rank amateur, offing my opinion on how I would adjust the image, if it were mine.
You are welcome to discount everything I have suggested - I will not be offended!
I hope your clients are very happy with this image - they should be!

hahaha...what a fun wide angle shot,Hugo!
The low perspective is inspired and enhances the cow's expression...the earrings are a bit flashy..LOL..but glam shots do require certain accessories!...i do miss the catch-lights in the eyes,but minor issue in the overall capture...great timing to capture the cow chewing the grass and i think the sunny day sweep of clouds provides the perfect backdrop...good work!
i have a fondness for cows/steers and here is a soft portrait of one i did some time back that you may get a kick out of...he was HUGE!!!

All very true, bringing out the lot would definitely have produced a better result, showing more of the skin and muscle structures. I think in that case, the long grass would also have to be less of a clutter.
The initial idea I had was to shoot the cow in the middle of the field, also capturing it's paws (feet?) It would also require some assistance to make the cow pose as planned, and I'm not sure if a cow is that docile...:)
I stood half-way in a trench, getting my feet wet, leaning over, not looking through the view finder to get the camera closer, whilst trying to maintain my equilibrium by clutching at nettles... Not the most comfortable position for a good shoot - Guess I have to come better prepared next time.
I appreciate your feedback, I might just go for the full scale attack, and bring out the studio gear. You and Randy pinpointed what bugged me (but couldn't put my finger on) perfectly - thanks!

Yes, the nose is lighted, but you'll need some more detail under his face and body... Just my thought.
Actually, aside from strobes, I think reflectors would work to get good lighting under his head and lower body, but in your case the light position is a bit difficult (light is behind you, and for this subject easier said than done). I think you've done well considering the situation.

Yeah, I like cow comps! I think there should be a dedicated project...like "the Incredible, Edible Cow". Actually the world would be such a peaceful place if cows ruled the world. :)
This shot's interest is increased tremendously by the blade of grass in her mouth and the low perspective(watch those cow pies!). I agree with Jinggoy that more even lighting may have been desirable, perhaps fill flash. Don't know how cow might react to flash though. I like the puffy white clouds in blue sky as background.

Thanks for the feedback and the excellent critique... Using a strobe is a good point too, and one I considered, but decided against because I didn't want to scare off the cow, nor the curious farmer approaching me. It does lack the highlights in the eyes, though.
Given the lighting (rather low, but straight behind me, - see also the reflection in her wet nose) a fill flash would've reduced the shadow under her chin, but there's already quite some texture and details on top of the nose - Do you think it needs more?
