About Another from my travels this summer back into my own past. This is the bar in Craven, Sask, a tiny village near Regina where I lived, briefly, in the early 1980s. Back then, a glass of draft was 1.25. That's changed! But everything else was the same as the last time I walked out of there, more than 20 years ago. Some burning in and other mucking about with this shot, including converting to B&W from colour (with the addition of a green filter, to brighten the felt of the tables).

Armando, my friend! How nice to hear from you again! I was going through some photos the other night and came across the photoshop you did years ago of my son's head on a chicken's body... a brilliant piece of work. He's seven now, something I find difficult to believe.

Cheers,

Jon

Thanks, Andre. I'm not sure what small town bars are like in far off Ontario, but here in Saskatchewan, they pretty much all have a part that look like this.

Cheers,

Jon

Well now that's the question, isn't it? The whole expedition was a voyage of return. I have a couple other shots from this trip up on UF (the bowling alley, eg). I went back to the places where I grew up and tried to shoot them not as they are now, but as they exist in my memory. Which is not quite the same as "as they once were". Very difficult to do. I don't think I succeeded, really. I think that I found that a) you can't go home again; but b) when you get to the place where home once was, it is all strangely familiar but eerily wrong. Some things are totally different and others - like the Craven bar - haven't changed at all. One of the really good things about it was that I managed to lay some ghosts that had been haunting me for far too long.

wow... wonderful. The mucking about wiff filters and such goes down hard wiff me... but the sentiment and thought-out shot is wonderful. And did ya find the past is NOT what ya thought? Or was it a puzzle piece snapped into place that confirms your place and identity? I have no idea what I am on about... (beer may be involved)... or, wait a second (checks self) I am sober!!!! Is this a pic of what you remember? A pic of what you wish it was like? Or a pic of what you want it to be? Just wondering and loving the shot... of course, making allowences for the filters and such...

This brings back memories of my own misspent youth in high school. Or should I say, when I was supposed to be in high school. ;)
Well done Jon!
