A really excellent photograph.
Lots of interesting discussion too. Are there things that each of us might have done differently? Perhaps. Would we do it better than Mr. Rollins? Doubtful, at best it would be different. A good work of art, of any kind, is one that draws in, makes us want to linger, and if it is really really good, we depart a little better than we arrived. I will add this image to my favorites so that I may visit again. Best wishes, Jason

A touching image for me. It will span generations, as a re-emerging theme, and perhaps to their progeny.

very interesting the discussions held only half a year ago
today you will hardly find any similar deliberations
:(
of course, every picture could be improved technically, the only problem consists in losing it's aesthetical qualities (i.e. degenerating into kitsch) then
or becoming another, different picture.
as the poor amateur
who I am, I think it's
perfect
for the message intended:
urchins

very natural expressions in good light. These fatal compositions are still strong !

Great photo Wallace but I find it hard to believe that this was a 50mm lens. The legs and feet of the girl on the right seem unnaturally large as if it was a close up with a wide lens.

my kind of shot. this this very very nice!!

Sandy Stein   {K:936} 5/20/2003
Wonderful photo but I find the extra contrast and grainy effect a little too harsh. Also, the seated girls left leg appears to be elongated and becomes an eye catcher. Still a very effective photo.

great street/pj shot! has a nice rawness about it. i suppose if you had moved the camera down a fraction it might have been technically more correct but who cares. it's a fine image as is!

Congrats Wallace on EC. What an entry into Usefilm. I am a big fan B&W. I love the mood of the scene so much, it creates a wonderful feeling. Congrats again.

I was just telling someone the other day...I never rate a photo a 10 cause i to beleive there is always room for improvement, but I also know that what Al said about viewing a .jpg on a monitor will never compare to seeing the actual print. So much is lost in here and i think this image is proof of that.

As far as the expressions i think Wallace recorded a moment in time and the expressions say something about the situation these children are in.

Excellent image Wallace and well deserving of the EC award *smile* maggie

Very interesting replies... It's great. I have to agree with Greg when he says that perfection is all about the emotion a picture can generate... And indeed the distortion doesn't stop us from enjoying what we see... But wha's even more interesting to me is that we all seem to read these expressions differently. On my part, when I look at the little girl standing, I find her expression quite strange, enigmatic, absent, and it reminds me of the 19th century's traditional posed portraits... Empty, yet her soul is there on stand by. Not uninteresting at all. I am less interested in the other girl's expression. She is imo more camera conscious, and about to smile, but finally holding it back. I feel she's posing, she isn't really herself here... Fascinating how different people always interprete expressions differently. What's most worrying is that I may feel differently about each of the 2 expressions tomorrow, but this was well worth a little discussion.

The only beef I have with this image is the hot spot in the lower left pulls my eye too much. Once that is corrected the room above their heads and to the right might become a bit much. Overall, I thinkt he composition is a bit unbablanced compared to the viuals on the left versus the right. Fixing the hot spot might prove that right or wrong. As for the expressions, they are just fine. This is a great protrait.

id have given it an ec too, for whatever thats worth~

I don't think I agree with greg on this one, the expressions I see are not dull, they are child like curiousity and a bit of trepidation, I think they speak quite well from this photograph.

al shaikh   {K:15790} 11/23/2002
I did not want to nitpick about that top left corner its just a smidge off, but I think that's a bit too technical just to be technical. The mood really carries this image more than anything else. I'm pretty sure from the format there is a lot more space on either side and a bit of cropping could fix that in a second. If we are going to be absolutely super critical you could dodge out the door a tad and the stairs to open up that shadow. You could also dodge her hair a bit to open that texture up to make it pop, but this is all from viewing a tiny jpg on a computer screen so take it for what its worth.

Marc made some good points too and I thats why I posted what I did in the comment. Thank you marc and wallace. This one made my night.

Greg Summers   {K:1115} 11/23/2002
Yes, anything could be better, but i don't get that is the point od any particular photo - expressions are to each indicidual what they are - I found the girl's expressions to be dull and lacking in spirit - and it fits with the surroundings. The spontaneity of the photographer is all part of this - to catch a moment before it is gone. I look at a photo and base what I think on how it affects me - camer angles may have made on difference, but in the moment it took to change it, the expressions might have changed. i think about the image from Kent Syae in the 60s - the young woman with her hands outstretched over her fallen fellow student - a post came right out of the middle of her head - in another second, one of the most powerful images ever captured would most like not have been the same. This image has the power to move me as does the Kent State shot and to me, that is all there is to perfection.

This is a very good picture, yes. A perfect picture ? It depends how we understand this question. Is it as good as this picture could be there, that day, at that moment ? One could think so, indeed, but here is my personal opinion about it. Maybe the camera a tad lower and pointed a tad lower as well, would have prevented the mild distortion. Would that make a huge difference ? No. But it certainly won't be worse either. Now, about the light and the print, no problem at all for me: the tones are great. Finally, the most important, in my opinion, remains the subject in this particular kind of photography... How much do these expressions "talk" to us ? I'm not sure about others, but I personally have seen expressions that are fairly more alive and interesting than these two. So, good, and maybe even geat picture, but almost ever image you will find on this site can actually be better than it is. It is in our own interest to try to find out WHAT could be improved in each of them. I'm not sure how much sense I made here, but I tried...:-) I would be very interested to hear a few opinions about the above - especially yours, Wallace... Very good job anyway. Best regards.

Wonderful textures in this one. Wallace, can you give us some details about this one? Where it was taken, etc.

   {K:2647} 11/23/2002
Yes indeed, striking. The composition is good. The children looking in the camera make you as a viewer feel more part of the image. Only minor thing is the shadow on the face of the smaller child. Of course it doesnt hurt the image which is very strong, and which can tell many stories depending on the interpretation the viewer gives it.

very nice, great composition, lovely texture. the lower left hand corner is a little hot but thats just a minor detail. nice capture.

I cannot imagine anything i would improve - even the dark shadow adds to the mood of the image - sad and dark - no way out- no way in

Bart Aldrich   {K:7614} 11/23/2002
An earthy, humane PJ feel slightly reminiscent of Dorothea Lange's 'dust bowl' images of the 30's.
