Darlene,
Excellent capture of this basically shy bird. You caught him with a great expression on his face. He is a male from what can be seen in the picture. Unlike most birds, the female Kingfisher has the orange colouring on the chest, while the male is only blue and white.

I could be mistook, but there's a Photoshop plug-in called Knockout that cuts an image away from its background. It's pretty effective. You can get individual hairs preserved with the background removed.
Anyway, it's a great image. Well done.

It's an adult male. Juveniles have rufous on flanks, adult females same but rufous continues across in a rufous breast band below the neckband. Consider getting "The Sibley Guide to Birds"
