  Q. Fungus and Scratch in Lenses

Asked by Shary Shary    (K=428) on 5/5/2002
After my trip to Howaii, I found that my 2XS Converter has (1) a scratch on the coating of its internal element, which is not in the Centre of the lens. (2) Also, in the perferal areas of one of the internal elements of my 50mm Pentax (f 1.4) two spots of fungus were formed. In you experience, how such problems can affect the sharpness of the image.
Despite I kept my lenses and my camera's body in sealed bags with moisture absorbents (extra strength) every night on my return to my hotel, the fungus was formed anyway. Is there any solution to such problems, ie, can the fungus be cleaned somehow. What would you do when you come across such problems?
Thanks,
Shary

Get a firm quote on the repair. Could well be that replacing the item is cheaper than getting it repaired (especially if it is an older or cheaper item).
Depending on the size and position of the damage, the effects could be minimal, but fungus tends to spread once it takes a hold and can quickly make lens elements useless.
