Q. UV filter

Thanks to all who have answered my questions so far about filters. One final question: When using any filter other than UV, is it necessary to remove the UV filter, which as I understand would otherwise remain on the lens as a lens protector, or should other filters, such as a polarizer, simply be placed over the UV filter?

It is best to have only one filter on the lens. The more glass you have in front of the lens the more distortion, flare, ghosting, vingneting etc. you are inviting.

Just for the sake of adding an answer: True, it is better to have as little filters on your lens as possible, to avoid distortion, flare, vigneting,... However, leaving it on if you add one other filter shouldn't hurt too much yet, and can save you some time sometimes.

I confess to leaving my UV filter on over another filter as simply a layer of protection for my moose filter and lens glass.
Maybe that's part of my problem! :-)
Actually, the moose filter is new and I haven't gotten slides back from the lab that show the effects on my images. Will post again after I get the slides back.
