  Q. new telezoomlens for Minolta Maxxum 5: which one?

Asked by Marijke Beintema    (K=105) on 7/25/2003
Hi,

I'm looking for a telezoomlens for my new camera. I've been looking around for a while, and there are four lenses that I can afford, and that answer my needs, as far as I can see. The things I want to take pictures of, are mainly concerts, but also a bit of garden shoots and portraits. Considering that, which lens would you recommend?

- Minolta AF 70-210/4.5-5.6 II ø 49mm
- Minolta AF 75-300/4.5-5.6 D ø 55mm
- Sigma AF 70-300/4.0-5.6 DL macro super 58mm
- Tamron AF 70-300/4.0-5.6 NEW macro 1:2 62mm
- Tamron AF 80-210/4.5-5.6

(the reason why I'm in doubt about whether to go to 210 or to 300, is the weight of the lens, suggestion on this too please)

Why not use the new Tamron 28-300? Very small & compact.

When I look for a lens I look for how fast the lens is. I recently bought a Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8 lens and I'm very pleased with its performance. For concert photos a faster lens is ideal. Use fast film (800-3200 ISO)and a fast lens and you're all set. I know that they don't like you to use a flash and if you are going to be with press photogs you might be asked to leave if you're the only one using a flash.

Of the lenses you mention the Minolta 75-210 probably is the best in quality.

The Sigma and Tamrons you list are very poor indeed (as are ALL 28-300 and 28-200 lenses, stay well clear of those).
