Hi Ray, thanks for the comment... I've had quite a streak on front page featured images heh? Much appreciated... The colours of the Devil's Golf course are exceptional. When I first saw a photo of this place, I thought it was way too blue, but having been there, I realise they were completely realistic... The tones at sunrise are just amazing, and they change so rapidly once the sun hits the valley! Unbelievable and breathtaking!

Cheers,

Hugo

Great work. Like dividing a single foro in its three domains of fore- middle- and background, giving a triptychon but a vertical one.

All colors much very well and result in a cool blueish atmosphere.

A touch of infinity - both spatial and temporal!

Hi Hugo,

wow, this is wild. I really love the blue theme here. The only thing I'm not so sure of are the drop shadows in grey scales around the single images.

anyway, this image is on the "rocks" =)

Interesting subject of similar elements, the upper portion the salts looks like a wave, it must be very interesting place to visit, and your collage gave a good example of the nature phenomena.
I like the new style composition and the room given to each elements.

Excellent combination again Hugo. What could easily turned out to be boring were changed in a very intersting combination. I like the low angle on top with the emphasis on the texture in the salt, moving on to the main image with a slightly higher viewpoint, showing the expanse with the changing horizon adding interest. The bottom one closing in on the salt detail rounds of the experience. Well done again!

Very COOL colors, literally!
Love this one, Hugo! If one didn't know better, you'd think this was in Mammoth rather than Death Valley.
I like the arrangement, excellent!
Composition in each case is superb, good lines to all of them.

Very well done, as usual!
Have a GR8 evening,
Lori :)

Fantastic pastel palette you have here Hugo, and the first shots low angle is very nice, how the formation in the "ice" is compared with the formation of the rock. The second one with the curved line and great composition and at last the tilting x of the lines... and nice light. A great way to show the same thing, a detail in the ice, but from 3 different ways!

Happy Easter,
Jeanette

Hi John, I really appreciate your feedback. It really helps me a great deal in assessing the flaws in my workflow and images. Thanks!

I don't think you've understood it correctly... I am / was struggling with the new panorama feature, and the differnces between the sharpening feature UF presents when uploading a photo; the image on page looks different than the large scale, but I think I've solved this by setting sharpening to "none" when uploading a panorama larger than 850 px. Did you see the large panoramic photo? It'll requires some scrolling on most monitors, but that's part of the plan, it offers a chance to view each image in a larger format, whilst the image page shows the overview.

I intend to blow these up in print and frame them together, with a different frame style, of course, this one was a trial, and an unsuccessful one at that.

I agree with you on the sequence; in the three uploads in this series, the middle one is the dominant one, but with this arrangement, the chronological sequence doesn't fit. If I had to choose a favourite, I think it would be the first one, with this one as a close second.

Thanks again for your time and comment, much appreciated!

Cheers,

hugo

Hugo

This is a fascinating series of vertical panoramas (and I've finally managed to steal a few minutes to look at them!)

If I understand correctly, you have uploaded them in this format to UF in order to get some feedback, but the format has not been designed specifcally for UF. I can imagine that these would look superb as a series of three on a wall, but IMO are just not comfortable to view on a computer screen (at least, not on mine...).

I like the way the point of view rises in successive images from top to bottom in this one, thus overcoming the potential difficulty of the dominant centre image. I would perhaps prefer the top image to have been taken before the central image, or maybe I'm just missing a subtlty here.

The concept of all three sets of images is beautifully devised and inspires a longer look.

I'm not convinced about the frames, but this has already been covered in some depth in previous comments.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for your elaborate comment, much appreciated! And, yes, I love these conversations too,

Glad to hear about the details worked out, I think I'll have it under control in the future. The issues with the previous one originated due to a combination of late night work, wanting to get some sleep and an illogical PS sequence in editing.

As to the frame, I'm not too satisfied with that either. I can only agree with your point. The thing is, that I do believe an image can benefit from a frame, especially if presented on the internet on an even bg colour. I've been toying with the off-white image tone and with the dark grey panorama window for the panoramic shots. In this case, that clearly didn't work out. The embossed element didn't quite work because of the lack of the shadows, and yes, the 1990's website look doesn't quite work. I'll revert back to the K.I.S.S. principle, nothing more than a simple 1px line, or, if applicable, something heavier like in the NYC series.

On to the order, I think it's fairly consistent with the other two, but the thing that bugs me about this one is the shifted chronological order; middle one shot first, then the top one, and the bottom one only when the sun hit the salt flats - it was a sunrise shot. I think I'll print them out all in one *big* paper, then cut them up, and put them in one single frame, a 3x3 matrix.

The thing I like most about this series is the dominance of the middle shots, and, basically, the luxury of having to choose from other decent photos to flank them. A pity the frame kinda ruins it...:) Oh, well, that's what Usefilm is for, and I'd never even think about attempting such a thing with my commercial stuff..:)

Now I'm being tedious... Sorry, but this being one of the best feedbacks I've ever received, I thought I'd owe you this one...

Cheers,

hugo

Howdy Hugo!

I love the tones here. The brisk contrast of the salt flat (that now looks like salt to me:) ) works very well against each sky and mountain line in the background. The study of the bottom cell (as seen in your larger pano post) is so dramatic compared to the top two, in that the shadows are so drawn, adds a very good anchor of contrast to the composition.

I like this very much, and have been looking at it off and on since you posted it. The details look much better on my monitor at work (21" CRT calibrated daily).

Standing back, away from my monitor, posing the image as the only thing on screen, this comes to life in all it's beauty and detail. I'ts taken me a while to get my thoughts words, as I wanted to concentrate on my comments. (been very busy w/ work, and wanted to give your image my 100% attention.. so please forgive me in the delayed comments)

Here's my one thing... I have a problem with the frame you're using for the composition. The rounded 'button' shaded gray frame adds a 1990's web site layout feel to your images. While it may work on a single image (like the top cell), it steals depth away from the entire composition. It's forcing the images away from the frame, and the light highlight on the right side of the bevel on each cell almost upstages the very intense and beautiful colors and contrast you've captured. Look at the middle cell, where the blue mountain touches the frame edge. It's terminating the image with too much contrast vertical. Know what I mean? Curious to see what it would look like if the frame were a flat color, and that color was the outcome if you were to take your 3 images, and screen them all together in one layer, and then hit that image with a blur of about 500+, melting all the colors together into one color... and that's your frame color. Keeping the width..because that works *very* well!

Now, all that being said about the frame, the images are awesome. The order they are in is *perfect* If this were hanging on a wall, I would love the fact that the bottom cell is what I would see looking down. Very well done!

These compositions are not easy! I've been working on my moon images night after night, and keep scrapping the entire composition every time. I guess I need to learn from you, and just get it out there for all to comment on, and learn.

Sorry for the long comment! I do love these very open conversations about our images!

cheers,
-Joel

Hi Kes,

Thanks for the feedback. I think you're right, there are some dust bunnies in the sky (and probably elsewhere too) After a few days of shooting constantly from dawn till dusk, I didn't manage to clean my sensor properly... I already cleaned out most of them, but I guess I missed these... Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

This is a wonderful series of panoramas.

This one really does make me think of a large frozen lake! In the strongest (IMO) center image, I like your use of the diagonal crust/wave of salt to lead the eye to the convergence of the mountains.

Is it my imagination or are there dust spots (lens or sensor) showing up in the sky? I have such a horrid monitor...sorry if it is the fault.
Best regards,
kes

Hi Doyle, thanks for the feedback. Never been to the Utah salt flats, but have seen it featured in many films and documentaries about those speed records. Facinating places, as if entering a different planet.

Hi Robert, yeah, to go to Race Track playa, you need to take a 35mi. dirt road, but it's well worth the effort, I found the race track one of the most intriguing places I've ever seen. Especially at sunrise or sunset... But so are many other parts of DV, don't you think? Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

I wanted to go where the rocks move by myself but never made it there. I think it's a dirt or gravel road not sure for I have never been there before. Nice capture of the salt and the 3 image collage.

Great work here Hugo . . . and congratulations for the multiple same day, front page listing! I like the title and the images remind me (to a degree) of the Utah Salt flats where the land speed records were set not so very long ago. Not a great place to be lost without water . . . or even WITH water. Death Valley is quite beautiful and you've managed to capture it quite elegantly.

Groeten,

Hugo
