Thanks for correcting me my Viking (and might I mention blonde) friend. Uhhhhh . . . I think, though . . . that's what I said . . . It's a State Park . . . NOT a National Park. But you're right . . . it is a beautiful hiking place. Don't make me refer to you as a "Great Dane"!!! LoL!
And, yeah . . . I've been kinda' baaaaaadd about the weather comments . . . but cheer up . . . I'm an equal opportunity offender. :)

Although being a Dane I must correct you:-)) They did call it Catalina state park or national park and I hiked there which was absolutely awesome!! Catalina Island- is that a real island or an amusement park?! Well had I been in your area I would have looked you up for sure - couldnīt have missed each other with all the cameras flying in the air constantly:-))I might kidnap some of your animals though;-) So you wore shorts, eh?! Hmmm you had to mention that, eh?! Shame on you! I went all the way from Denmark looking forward to enjoy some warm weather and it was cold there, and now you say this! HRUMF!*LOL* Well at least I didnīt get a sunburn:-) Take care Annemette

You're welcome Annemette. Catalina there is a state . . . not a national park. Our Catalina Island is walking distance and you didn't come here without checking in . . . or I'd have to yell at you! LoL! Glad you had a good trip . . . I suspect we were a bit warmer here than you were where you went since we WERE wearing shorts! :)

Thank you SOOOOOO much for all the links that I unfortunately didnīt receive until coming home due to the delay of the messages on UF! Still I had a wonderful trip going to Mount Lemon, the desert museum, Catalina nationalpark, Saguro national parks etc. Just wonderful although it was a bit cold there - no use for bikini and shorts:-( Gorgeous trip- how I miss the sun, the wild nature and the huge cars!:-)) Take care Annemette

An excellent capture of this sweet little bird Doyle; oh how I envy you these pretty little things. I think you have done very well for a sort of 'smash and grab' shot and aren't you a lucky boy being treated to a new toy (SB 800) from your loving wife Marlyce. Wonderful details and beautiful rich tones captured in under less than idyllic conditions. Well done to you my dear friend.......You must find time to tell us more about the Pomona Bird Mart Doyle. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray:)

Hi Doyle, my pleasure. You guessed correctly, I am a plant ecologist and my love for photography started as a natural consequence of the use of photography to record vegetation types and plants. It also gave me the opportunity to see many of the beautiful places in South Africa seldom seen by tourist - off the beaten track!
About the Euphorbias. They are mostly succulent, most often leafless and armored with various arrangement of spines. Many Euphorbia species has a milky latex which often is poisenous and are used as such by the rural black tribes to kill fish for example or to treat their spear or arrow points. The latex from one species causes serious blisters on the skin and can cause blindness.
Aloes on the other hand always have a clear, often honey coloured latex. Aloe sap is often bitter and many species have highly acclaimed (and scientifically verified) medicinal qualities e.g. Aloe vera and Aloe ferox.
I know this is not a straight answer but you know, South Africa has more than 22000 plant species of which I know only a few thousand. Often species within a single family can display huge differences due to specific habitats they occur in. SO I dont have all the answers - often, and are still learning every day. Kind regards. Joggie

Wow Joggie, thanks so much for the information. It's really interesting how much people learn (on the side) while pursuing hobbies and/or professions like photography . . . as well as countless others. I'm always well pleased to learn new things. Now, let me ask a personal question . . . are you a botanist or biologist or some such thing to have this expertise so readily available?? And I had heard the Masai warriors used to dance in thorns or some such thing . . . which I presume weren't cacti related now. So how can one distinguish between succulents with spines or thorns and cactus? Here I thought succlents WERE cacti!
Thanks again Joggie . . . I certainly appreciate your time and comments very much!! :)

Lovely colour and timing Doyle! This hummingbird is sipping nectar from an Aloe species (probably Aloe arborescens or a close hybrid if I am not mistaken). Just an interesting fact - Africa has no indigenous Cactii. Here, that niche is filled by a large group of succulents called Euphorbias and related species. The aloes on the other hand are of the lily family although they have developed various life forms from rock creepers, grass aloes with thin grasslike leaves, shrubby and tufted species all the way up to trees (the quiver tree = Aloe dichotoma) reaching 5 to 8 meters in height. Kind regards and thanks for sharing! Joggie

Groet Riny!

LoL! You're really quite the character this morning John!! Live birds are transported to a place in Pomona (where they hold the LA County Fair) This is where people come from many states around to look at and admire them. Pet them, buy them, buy them toys and perches . . . pamper their little ones . . . some bird owners and bird breeders (you know what I mean by bird breeder too . . .) seem to have as much affection for their pets as dog or cat lovers . . . some likely more. The birds are loaded, while alive, into a liscensed, climate controlled, transportation facilitator and directed to their new homes for a slight fee. In other words, we drive them to Pomona and sell them to people as pets. Climate controlled means the windows are (generally) up. LoL! :)

Excellent the way the head is sharp and the wings are blurred. The flowers are attractive but perhaps distract just a little from the main subject.
Something a little unsettling in your "about" though, at least for me who doesn't know what the Pomona Bird Mart is. Bearing in mind your love of birds, I can imagine that this is perhaps an exotic bird market for those who appreciate their beauty (rather than the sort of market where they are traded for other reasons). But then you say the "live" birds get loaded... Oh dear, what happens to the other ones?

Joice: I had the camera equipment listed and the camera with me when my lovely wife pointed out the hummingbird. I use manual settings or might have done better . . . but I got this in the time I had by setting exposure via aperture and pointing . . . waited for the side shot . . . and clicking. If I had it to do over, I would have increased the shutter speed! Keep the camera nearby . . . you just NEVER know!
