I think that perhaps this would work better as a vertical format image. Crop out the branch to the left as it adds nothing to the photo, only distraction, and crop some off of the branch to the right, just to the left of that bright out of focus vertical branch in the background, as it also is not needed. Focus seems to be sharpest at the feet leaving the head a touch on the soft side. Perhaps stop down a few more stops if possible to bring the head into focus or change your focus point. Nice image.

I really like the colors and details...but what makes this shot for me is the wonderful background that gives this cardinal such a 'sense of place'.

Oh, cardinals are beautiful. My mother and I have actually been getting into bird watching lately. There's a Vermillion Flycatcher that hangs around our yard a lot. I only have a digital camera though, and the zoom is nothing for me to get a good picture of him. =\ The lighting in this photo is beautiful. Excellent capture.

Love the side lighting, eye catch... perfect DOF... and wonderful colors... Great shot Richard... my nit and it is very subjective... if you have placed the bird, on the right hand side, to give it all the air it needs for the look direction... just a thought

There isn't enough of the shore showing to be of any use in the image, and you can't see the gull very well because of the backlighting.

This might work better if you cropped in real close to the gull and brightened it up a little.

The sharpness is the main strength of this shot, the composition doesn't matter in a bird's flight shot.

great shot but why did you compose with so much unfocused sky? just needed to know for my benefit.

The subtle tones and light make this work for me. The composition is excellent but it doesn't need to be textbook to make this work.

Richard,
The depth of field is a bit too shallow as the bird's tail and claws are slightly out of focus. Stopping down and increasing the exposure to compensate would be my advice on such a close subject. Also, I would crop tighter on the left and top to make the bird's shadow the center of the image.

Richard,
I would crop off some of the water on the right, and maybe a bit off the top. I prefer to have more space in the direction the bird is looking than behind it.

Richard,
This is the best of the 3 bird photos you uploaded today. Slightly off-center with more space in the direction of flight giving the subject somewhere to go. Good composition.

By far the best of the three Richard. The Cardinal looks a little soft, but I am not at all distracted by the clutter of branches of the one branch in your other two.

Nice job.

The thumbnail of this one doesn't do it justice at all. I really like this picture, but maybe cropped a little more so that more emphasis is on the bird? And maybe add a little contrast.

When I saw the thumbnail I thought like ??? what is this? But now that I see it I'm surprised as to how the colours of the bird jump out of the whole of branches.
