Thanks for your nice comment. I was standing on the bridge to the castle and was a bit lucky with the shodows ... downside was, that the sun already got a bit weak for IR ... it was 6:45 P.M.

Learn how to do a levels correction on photos ... there are many PS turorials in the web ... here's one of them:

Then you're ready for the next step ... the trick is, that you have to do the levels adjustment on every color channel (red, green, blue) separately instead on the whole image.
If you used in-camera custom white balance, the image will have a brownish sky and cyan or blueish plants after the post-processing. If you use the channel-mixer now to exchange red against blue and vise versa, you get the Channel-Shift-Style shown here ... in the red channel set the reds to -100 and blues to +100 and in the blue channel do the opposite.

Not myself, but I saw several nice IR shots taken with these cams. But the 350D seems to be the better choice of the two (for IR). But beware of a wrong lens choice ... many lenses are a bad choice for IR and show a light spot in the center of the image. The Canon 28-135IS is my favorite lens ... not only for IR ;-)

Sorry Chris but forgot to ask what might be a stupid question - do you ever take your pics on windy days or do you wait until there is no wind because of the long exposures ?
Also, have you ever tried the 10D or 350D with an IR filter and what do you think ?

You just need the right place, the right camera and a tripod ... and a R72 of course ;-)

No, all my cameras are unmodified ... I just use a tripod and the R72. Manual white balance and the right post-processing is the key. You have to do a levels correction on every color channel separately.

I think your IR images, all of them, to be first class - you capture the sort of images I could only hope to get !
Do you use modified camera bodies or do you use them 'as is' with the likes of a Hoya R72 ?

Hi Alyazia,
for IR photography you'll need a filter ... the Hoya R72 is the one I use.
To learn the basics of digital IR visit dpfwiw.com/ir.htm
With a Canon 20D it is possible, but it's very difficult and you'll need bright sunlight, because this cam is not very IR-sensitive. Have a look at my latest IR image "In Memoriam" ... it was taken with a 20D. If you should try it yourself, you'll have to know, that you have to overexpose about 5 f-stops with the filter attached ... and always shoot in RAW.

i looked at ur profile.. i realy do like the IR thing.. however,,,, i didn't understand how do u capture such effects?! is it type of filters, lens, film or wut?? sorry i'm not that good.. i only take shots that attrachts me.. i really want to learn more! can u explain more?? thanx!
btw, i'm using Canon 20D does it make any diffrence??

Have fun with IR, but keep in mind, that it's not easy with a 20D ... don't get frustrated, when the first tries don't come out as expected. You'll need an intensive sun without any wind, because exposure times are often around 20-30 seconds at ISO400-800.
Always shoot in RAW and do a levels adjustment for each color channel separately in Photoshop, but beware of banding and high noise in the blue channel.

Hi Guapo,
my 20D is not modified ... have a look at the exposure time ;-) But it is important to use in-camera custom white balance and to overexpose by 5-7 f-stops depending on the lighting conditions, which is needed, because the metering doesn't work correctly in IR. On the other hand the autofocus works fine.
The 20D is a bad choice for IR, but it can give nice results though ... but it's hard work.

Hi! I have a 20D and would like to try IR photography, but I know that in the 20D there is A IR filter which is blocking most of IR. Have you removed this filter to your 20D before shooting those IR picture or have you made it without any modification of the camera?

Hi Sam,
getting good IR results with a 20D is extremely difficult. First of all we need to shoot in RAW, because a lot of post procession is needed. Second we need custom white balance ... do it in-camera withg the filter attached on a white piece of paper or better with a 18% gray card, if available. Then we need to know, that though the 20D is able to use autofocus in IR, it's not able to meter corrctly through an IR filter ... use M-Mode and overexpose by 5-7 f-stops depending on the lighting conditions.
Regarding the post processing it's important to do a levels correction for every color channel separately ... but beware of banding in the blue channel.

Hi Chris M....I have a question for you.....I have the Canon 20D and the Same lens you have...I also have the hoya R72 IR filter...I have taken 200 shots( all Tri-pod ) and none of them come out...Even after swaping the Red and Blue channels in PS(Photoshop CS2).
What am I doing Wrong, And what is it that I need to do to acheive Awesome IR shots Like yours?
