Excellent contrast, I have recently been trying to print b&w in a darkroom and would be very happy to get a print like that. I like the amount of texture in both the forground and sky.

for me the narrow DOF works all right,as the flat lighting does also. i agree a much wider dof and dramatic lighting might be nice, but it doesnt mean one alternative is better than the other. personal taste comes first,in my opinion ;-)
btw, your title is a song by Long Ryders i like a lot.
be happy Robert!

Thankyou Steve. I rekindled my love of photography earlier this year and have taken a lot of photos since. This is my favourite of the year not only because I like the way it turned out but because I envisaged it to come out just as it did.

Excellent, Robert!

This image really deserves more comments. The composition is good, and the background is really compelling - I want to keep looking at it.

The out-of-focus patterns are something unique to photography, in fact, unique to "telephoto" photography - you managed it very well in this photo.

Best regards,
SteveR

Very nice details and interesting background... altho' I think the photo would be better with a bit more cropped from the bottom.

Out by 5am is pretty keen I guess. Don't always get a chance to be in these areas so I may as well make the most of it.

I will give it another go later this week as all my other shots of this scene are very limited in DOF as well.
Thanks again.

I agree Robert. But I do think if the focus trailed off just a bit slower it would carry you further into the frame. I think would reinforce the feeling your talking about. I do agree the DOF needs to be limited, Just a little deeper is all.

Your comments are appreciated, thanks. I really love out of focus (OOF) areas in a photo and tend to focus (pun intended) on them.
Photographically it may look better with more DOF but for me, I get a warm feeling seeing a bit of smooth OOF.

Robert, I really like the tones in this shot. However I wish there was more DOF. I think focus trails off to soon.

Mikael,

thanks for your comments. The Velvia film is very saturated with colour and is great to use when the light is subdued as in early morning and late evening when the sun is almost or totally gone.
During the day it is best to use a wider latitude negative film or slide film such as Astia.
As you can see in this photo the Velvia film and flash I used resulted in very saturated colours which I am going to tell you is what I was after ).

Robert, Thanks for the comment, since you asked I respond in kind. Love the shot, nicely composed. HAD TO LOOK 2X to notice the trainman leaning out the window! Without seeing the whole setting I might have shifted the shot slightly left to see more of the Loco and eliminate the building to the right. The blacks look good on my laptop lcd. Nice.
