Hi Doyle,

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - nice touch in your about! Good shot, crisp, clean and lots of details. In all fairness, they fade to becoming peripheral because of the starfilter, and quite frankly, I don't really see the added value of that filter with such a shot. Nevertheless, you handled it well - exposure, flash, the works are prettyt well balanced. Nice shot.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Branimir,

A slightly limited tonal range, grainy (especially considering the 25 ISO film, I'd say), the blown out window light (amongst other parts), and at first glance a far from perfect photo.

BUT.

I think those snap shot elements also add tremendously to the atmosphere. Poverty, somewhat gloomy and without hope - It makes the photo powerful too... There's more to this one than meets the eye, and that's what I like about it. Intriguing shot!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi AJ,

Increadible view - and one of the most extreme panos I've seen in a while! I remember this view well - made that crossing a few years ago. I think it usually is a bit more hazy across the Gibraltar Strait - but we managed to get our glimpse of the Rif mountains and Tanger in Morocco too. Very good photo.

Cheers,

Hi Thilo,

This image reminded me of a photo by a Scott Somebody, who posted a photo of a silhouetted group of people admiring a fiery ball / setting sun through the glass windows of a London Museum (tate modern - I think) Awesome feel.

The comparison is easily made - the almost unreal combination of the people walking about freely in an under-water world - very cool.

The main differnece with the setting sun photo is that the shutterspeeds were undoubedly much slower here - which does show a bit in the edges around the silhouettes, and the motion blur of the fish.

Still, the poses of the people, looing around them in amazement are excellent, and contribute a large deal to the feel of this photo.

In the overall composition, I think the pano-format is very functional here - a pity the pano version is the same size as the one on this page - I'd love to see this one a bit bigger. Also, the clipped off people on the left and (much less so) right of the photo create a minor distraction IMHO

Basically, that's about all I have to say - scrolling back up, I do notice the four brighter spot lights - creating an even stronger surrealism, if not alienated feel to this photo. Very cool!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Joel,

Sorry - it's been a while. Work has been keeping me from Usefilm or anyother fun stuff for a while now.

The atmosphere in this photo is great - extremely moody, but also quite ominous. Although it all looks rather peaceful, it also bears something threatening in it. The prelude of some severe weather. All of this emphasised by the B&W, and by the slow shutter, softening up the water beautifully.

My only nit would be the highlighs being a bit blown out - a minor clipping of the white might give it an even moodier grey cast; but that's about it. I don't think this shot should be about technicalities or perfection - it's the feel that matter shere, and that aspect is superbly captured...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Joggie,

The colours look as if the terrain has been bleached by the sun - pale, with only a few hints of their original colour - reading your about does scatter that thought, though.

The contrast in bright reds and faded pale whites in the background is nice - as is the dry feel of the undergrowth in the foreground.

Eventhough it gives the impression of a slightly reduced saturation, I don't think it is - the feel of desert. Very intriguing shot - fascinating as usual.

Hi Gerhard,

This is not the first time I stumble upon one of your photos. The subjects, the contrasts and the "tension" in them are very appealing and eye catching. Very good shot, impressive atmosphere.

Hi Tim, As usual, the lines in your composition are unrivalled. The chanel of water, guiding the eye through the icy banks towards the sunset (sunrise?) colours of the snowy peaks of Mt. Rundel... Fantastic photo!

Hi Nema,

The cool, impersonal feel of the subway, with the almost unpleasant green tones create a definite feeling of abandonment, and an uncomfortable way of being "alone". Very good diptych. The four people across the tracks are unreacheable; the empty chairs next to you emphasising the solitude on your end of the platform.

Very strong series, and a very creative way of portraying the "Alone" project - Superb!

Hi Ganea,

Nice! I like the warm tones coming from the shop window, surrounded by the cool tones of surroundings. It draws the attention to the primary subject beautifully. Well done!

Hi Aivar,

Very good tones. The spray of sand, showing the wind makes this photo to me. Good catch, and very good tones.

Hey Phil,

You forced me to scroll quite a bit down until I found a photo I might something useful to say about, even though I think the double awards say it all....:)

The Anvil Filter is quite powerful, and even though you can apply it to various types of photos, I think its use with such a landscape is the most suitable I can think of. It really creates a very powerful atmosphere. I could argue that the atmosphere is a bit forced as it relies too strongly on the photo, and isn't there in the original, thus overly used, which I usually don't care for, but I think I have to revise that priciple... It really works well here.

Hope you see what I mean - If the original is as good as the others from that series, with the subtle toning, maybe such a fierce filter isn't necessary, but the result is undisputably excellent. I really like the mood you induced.

The best part is probably, that in this case, the mood isn't forced at all, which is quite an achievement, next to the artistic approach in post treatment. Very well done!

Cheers,

Hi Joo,

Interesting to see how the tiny clowd blocking the sun becomes a very strong primary subject within the grey, rather sulky surroundings. Cool photo, well captured.

Hi Brenda,

Awesome tones, and a very scerene and tranquil feel - the silhouet of the lonely tree works beautifully to break the 50/50 separation between sea and sky.

A few things are a bit distracting, though - first, the tilt in the horizon, and secondly, I think the frame with your signature underneath is too elaborate for such a photo.

Although I do like the high saturation in this image, I think tweaking down the cyan tones would create a more intense feel, removing the somewhat unnatrual cast.

Sorry if this all sounds too negative - I do like this photo - good stuff!

Cheers,

Hi Manu,

Subtle way to go about a "natural triptych. I like the tones and the composition. Strange experience - to see those old houses with their vintage feel reflected so sharp and undistorted in the window panes. I like how you arranged it, too, aligning the three reflected buildings with the window frame. Nice shot!

The angle and shallow DOF create a strong atmosphere, together with the rain and the tonal range. Good shot - eyecatching.

Hi Reza, thanks for your comment. I appreciate your insight on the differences between the left image and the others - never looked at it that way, but I do see your point. As to which one is better? Hmmm. Not sure - there might be a use for either one - after all, it's a kitchen appliance. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, much appreciated!

Hi Joel,

yeah, me too... Also reading your recent comment, it seems were basically in the same hectisism - running off to remote places, and working almost around the clock....

As to the magenta cast, good point - its' why I placed it in the center, but I rather like the cold, steel feel of the image, pretty close to the real appearance. The red highlight was impossible to get on the flat surface around the buttons, and I needed to use my strobes as fill flashes in order to show the LED's, but I probably should've changed the tone a tad.... Too late now, it's already been printed and distributed...

Thanks for keeping me sharp!

Hi Joggie, I quite agree, there's a substantial difference between this type of photography and art. The intention with these photos is purely commercial - it needs to sell... And we'll find out soon enough if it does the trick.

thanks for sharing your thoughts, always very helpful, and provoking more thoughts. Great to see my image through someone elses' eyes!
